Vicia villosa (hairy vetch) has no documented traditional medicinal or culinary uses involving infusions, decoctions, tinctures, macerations, or poultices in any of the referenced sources (Bennett et al., 2021; Felter, 1898; Moerman, 1998; PFAF, 2019).

Common products:
Vicia villosa (hairy vetch) is produced primarily as a cover crop/forage seed and as green manure. It is harvested for hay, silage, and pelleted or baled fodder, and is used as a seed source in conservation agriculture and erosion control programs.

Industrial and craft applications:
Dried stems are used for low-quality fiber, twine, and coarse cordage. The standing mulch provides weed-suppressive ground cover that facilitates reduced-tillage systems and moisture conservation in row-crop rotations.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Young pods and seeds are consumed as a pulse in parts of South Asia and the Middle East after prolonged soaking and boiling to remove antinutritional factors. The seed is occasionally processed into dhal, flour, or sprouted food.

Colorants and tanning:
The plant is not used for natural dyes or tannins in documented industrial practice.

Wood and fiber:
There is no timber production; stems yield fiber for cordage and as a biomass mulch. Cellulose-rich stems can be converted to paper pulp with appropriate bleaching and delignification.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
There is no documented production of fragrance or cosmetic ingredients.

Properties relevant to use:
High nitrogen fixation from Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae increases soil fertility; stems provide fibrous biomass; and seed, rich in protein, supplies forage. Immature seeds can contain trypsin inhibitors and vicine–convicine; processing typically includes soaking, cooking, and fermentation to reduce antinutritional factors.

Standards and regulation:
Seed certification and varietal testing follow OECD and Association of Official Seed Certification Agencies (AOSCA) standards. Export shipments may comply with International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) rules. Food uses of Vicia seeds generally follow national food safety codes regarding antinutrient reduction in pulses; where used as fodder, national feed laws and maximum vicine–convicine levels apply.

Sustainability and sourcing:
In temperate agroecosystems, hairy vetch is established via certified seed and used in crop rotations to improve soil organic matter and reduce erosion. It is recognized as a cover crop in USDA NRCS practice standards. Management emphasizes inoculating with suitable rhizobia, optimizing seeding rates, terminating before seed set to avoid volunteer establishment, and controlling pests with integrated approaches. Certified seed improves establishment and reduces invasion risk where local ecology is sensitive.
