Pterocarpus indicus has long been valued as a bitter stomachic and antidiarrheal in Southeast Asia. In the Philippines, people prepare teas from stem bark or leaves to treat dysentery and diarrhea (Quattrocchi, 2012; Doi, 1979). In Malaysia and neighboring parts of peninsular Southeast Asia, bark infusions are drunk for similar stomach complaints (Burkill, 1966). In a Pacific context, Nakano recorded peoples of Micronesia using infusions of the stem bark for general gastrointestinal upset (Nakano, 2014). Along with ingestion, the species is used externally: in Vietnam crushed leaves or a decoction of fresh leaves is applied as a poultice to soothe skin eruptions and minor wounds (Do, 2015).

For practical use, a mild bark decoction follows a simple ethnobotanical pattern. Simmer about 10 g of chopped P. indicus stem bark in 250 ml of water for 10–15 minutes, let cool, and strain. Drink up to a cup two or three times daily when treating simple diarrhea or dysentery (Quattrocchi, 2012; Doi, 1979). Expect a slightly astringent, bitter taste typical of medicinal barks. Safety is important: there are no well‑established dose ranges for this species and preparations can be quite bitter, so limit use to short courses and stop if stomach irritation, dizziness, or rash occurs; pregnant or nursing people should avoid these preparations (WHO, 2020).

The bark contains well‑established phytochemicals—flavonoids, isoflavonoids, pterocarpans, and tannins—that plausibly underlie the astringent and antimicrobial actions attributed to the plant in ethnomedicine (Ruangrungsi, 1989; Liu et al., 2020; Mulholland et al., 2010). Modern studies have documented antibacterial activity consistent with traditional gastrointestinal applications, but clinical efficacy in people has not yet been confirmed.

Commercial availability is limited and preparations of P. indicus are still found mainly in local markets and among traditional healers in parts of Southeast Asia and Micronesia, while modern pharmacological interest continues to investigate its antimicrobial properties (Nakano, 2014; Liu et al., 2020).
