Butea monosperma, the flame‑tree, is a staple of folk medicine in the Indian subcontinent. Among the Ayurvedic practitioners of Rajasthan, the dried leaves are steeped in hot water to produce a mild tea that is traditionally drunk to relieve cough, sore throat, and low‑grade fever (Sharma et al., 2015). In the hilly regions of Nepal, healers prepare a decoction of the bark for treating dysentery and diarrhea; the bark is simmered for 30 minutes, strained, and the liquid is given in small doses (K. K. Sharma, 2018). In rural Bangladesh, the leaves are macerated in warm water to make a poultice that is applied to skin infections and wounds, a practice documented by Khan and colleagues in a 2012 ethnobotanical survey (M. H. Khan et al., 2012). All three traditions rely on infusions or decoctions, underscoring the plant’s value as a readily prepared remedy.
A simple, safe recipe for a daily tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried Butea monosperma leaves, add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water, cover, and let steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, sip slowly, and repeat once or twice a day. The tea is mild and pleasant, with a faint floral note. Pregnant women should avoid this preparation because the plant contains compounds that may stimulate uterine contractions; otherwise, moderate consumption (no more than two cups per day) is considered safe for most adults.
The therapeutic effects of Butea monosperma are largely attributed to its rich phytochemical profile. The leaves contain flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, isoflavones like genistein, and a range of tannins and saponins. These constituents have been shown in laboratory studies to possess anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities, which plausibly explain the plant’s traditional use for respiratory ailments, fever, and skin infections. Modern research has begun to confirm these properties, with recent in‑vitro studies demonstrating the leaf extract’s ability to inhibit inflammatory cytokines and to scavenge free radicals (Sharma et al., 2015). Butea monosperma produces a red-brown exudate known as Butea gum or dhak kino. The gum contains hydrolysable tannins (gallotannins) and phenolic compounds that are documented as effective leather-tanning agents and as natural brown dyes for protein fibers (e.g., wool, silk). These properties enable its use as a tannin source for vegetable tanning and as a dye mordant or direct dye in textile coloration (IFIC). Aqueous extracts of other plant parts (e.g., bark, wood, flowers) also yield brown dye solutions used on protein fibers (ICAR; Kumar & Singh).

The red gum from Butea monosperma is characterized by high hydrolysable tannin content (typically 30–40% in dry gum), which imparts good binding capacity to collagen in leather. The brown color of the tannins is retained in both tanning and dye applications, and hydrolysable tannins facilitate chelation with protein substrates.
