Gleditsia sinensis has a long place in East Asian folk practice as a cleansing expectorant taken as decoctions. Among Chinese practitioners, the soft fruit pulp inside the mature pod—called Zao Jiao (棘果肉)—is simmered in water to help “clear phlegm” and ease productive coughs, often with alkaloidal herbs in compound formulas. The sharper thorns of the same plant, known as Zao Jiao Ci (皂角刺), have likewise been simmered in folk medicine to “resolve toxicity” and soothe sore throats. These preparations appear in regionally familiar teaching texts such as Bensky, Clavey & Stoger’s Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica, in Wichtl’s Teedrogen, and in the World Health Organization’s Monographs on Selected Medicinal Plants, which treat Gleditsia sinensis as the accepted source of Zao Jiao and Zao Jiao Ci and record the traditional practice of decoctions prepared from either part. The WHO monograph also notes regional use in Vietnam and Korea for cough relief.
A simple but effective protocol is the expectorant pulp decoction: measure 6–12 g of dried fruit pulp and bring it to a gentle boil in 600 ml of water; reduce to a simmer and cook for 30–40 minutes, then cool and strain. Drink the strained liquid warm in two or three divided doses during the day. Because the pulp is rich in saponins, the liquid will foam; limit daily intake to a modest dose and do not use concentrated decoctions in large amounts. Contraindicated during pregnancy.
