Among the Khasi and Garo of Meghalaya (India), dried bark of Albizia procera is reported in a decoction taken as a traditional emollient for dyspepsia and gastric ulcer; this use is documented by Jain & Dutta (2013) in their northeastern India ethnomedicine survey. In Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, preliminary ethnobotanical field data likewise note leaf decoctions for gastritis and occasional bark or root poultices applied to sores and wounds; these observations are summarized by Venkatachalapathy et al. (2015). In eastern Bhutan, herbal practitioners describe leaf poultices applied to skin injuries and used in baths for rheumatic pains, a record preserved by G. G. Dorji (2004) in the Bhutan Medicinal Plants survey. In northern Myanmar, Naga communities have used both bark infusions and compresses of crushed leaves for managing swellings and sores, as reported by Ghorbani et al. (2012).
These practices center on specific plant parts. The bark is usually chopped and simmered, then strained for internal use as an emollient decoction, whereas fresh or dried leaves are pounded and applied topically as poultices or made into infusions for bathing. The regional contrasts—decoctions of bark for gastrointestinal comfort in northeastern India, leaf poultices for wounds and inflammatory swellings in Bhutan and Myanmar—reflect locally available pharmacological perceptions of the plant’s demulcent and soothing properties.
One practical, traditional-inspired recipe is a mild leaf infusion for skin care and occasional gastrointestinal discomfort in adults: place a small handful of fresh or 2–3 teaspoons of dried, clean young leaves into a cup of recently boiled water, cover, and steep for 8–10 minutes, then strain. For external use, apply the warm (not scalding) infusion to the affected area with a clean cloth as a compress or wash 1–3 times daily; for oral use, sip one cup twice daily for up to three days. Do not use this preparation during pregnancy, lactation, or in children; do not exceed the stated amounts or duration without guidance. Most preparations lack robust dose–response data; discontinue use if irritation or gastrointestinal upset occurs.
Phytochemistry that plausibly supports traditional use includes flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, triterpenoids including lupeol and β-sitosterol, and phenolics such as gallic acid; in a 2022 comparative study of Albizia species, Ramkumar et al. identified saponins in the methanolic leaf extract of A. procera alongside the above compounds, and earlier work (Gurung & Bhattacharya, 2010) detected quercetin and kaempferol derivatives in the bark. Current research focuses on extracts and fractions rather than named products, but cultivated material remains locally available and practitioners in Meghalaya, Bhutan, and parts of Myanmar continue to prepare leaf and bark remedies with these preparations.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Wood and fiber:
Timber (general construction, furniture, fuel), utility poles, railway sleepers; light construction, flooring, turnery, cabinetry; matches; charcoal and fuelwood. Heartwood is light brown to reddish brown; sapwood pale; grain usually interlocked; texture coarse to medium. Green density approximately 660 kg/m³ and air-dry density about 700–750 kg/m³; air-dry strength values generally high, with modulus of rupture around 80–100 MPa and modulus of elasticity about 9–12 GPa. Wood contains silica (small to moderate amounts), limiting saw-blade dulling in some operations and reducing machining quality; interlocked grain can cause checking and surface roughness unless cutting conditions are optimized.
Industrial and craft applications:
Sawmilling and woodworking (turning, carving, carving), charcoal production. Machining characteristics vary with tool wear due to silica content; best results obtained with sharp tools and careful planing to control tear-out. Glued panels are workable with suitable adhesives; surface finishing requires attention to interlocked grain and open pores.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
Not documented.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Not documented.
Colorants and tanning:
Bark used in leather tanning as a source of tannins; produces brown shades on protein fibers. Bark tannin content is reported to be moderate (e.g., around 10–15% on a dry basis depending on provenance), with hydrolyzable and condensed components identified.
Properties relevant to use:
Density and strength enable use in light structural applications; interlocked grain and silica content influence machining, finishing, and tooling. Bark tannins support leather tanning with brown coloration.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing legume suitable for reforestation, farm forestry, and degraded-land restoration. Wood yields are moderate; conventional harvesting and regeneration practices apply. Trade may be seasonal and locally managed; wide planting distribution reduces reliance on wild stands.
Standards and regulation:
No species-specific standards identified; general timber and timber-product regulations apply in producing regions. Tannin extracts for leather tanning generally conform to standard practices and national regulations for leather-processing inputs.
