In Taiwan, dried Acacia confusa bark is boiled in water to make a decoction traditionally used to treat diarrhoea and dysentery; patients usually drink about 30 ml twice daily after meals (Chiang et al., 2012). Among the indigenous Amis of eastern Taiwan, fresh leaves are crushed into a moist poultice and applied to cuts or insect bites for 15–20 minutes before rinsing (Huang et al., 2017). In the Philippines, the Tagalog community prepares a leaf tea by steeping dried leaves in hot water; the infusion, sweetened with honey, is taken two to three times daily to soothe coughs (Sanchez et al., 2019). Hakka villages in southern Taiwan mash fresh roots with a little warm water to form a paste applied as a poultice to boils and other skin infections, refreshing the dressing twice daily (Wu et al., 2018). These water‑based preparations involve leaves, bark or roots and show how the same species serves diverse therapeutic purposes across three cultural settings.
Leaf tea is made by placing 3 g of dried Acacia confusa leaves (about one heaping teaspoon) into a small teapot, adding 250 ml of freshly boiled water, covering and steeping for 10 minutes. The infusion is strained and served warm; many users add a teaspoon of honey for flavour. The tea is normally drunk twice a day—once in the morning and again after the main meal. Safety notes: pregnant women and children under five should avoid regular use, and people taking anticoagulants or who are sensitive to tannins should limit consumption to one cup daily to prevent mild stomach upset.
Chemical analyses of Acacia confusa have consistently identified flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, myricetin) and phenolic acids (gallic and caffeic acids) in both leaves and bark (Lin & Tsai, 2019). The bark also contains high levels of condensed tannins—primarily proanthocyanidins—that impart astringent activity, while the leaves are especially rich in flavonol glycosides. These compounds are well‑documented for antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory effects, which explain the traditional use of leaf infusions for cough and bark decoctions for diarrhoea.
Recent pharmacological studies show that methanol extracts of Acacia confusa bark inhibit growth of diarrhoea‑causing bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Shigella and Vibrio cholerae, supporting the traditional decoction’s use (Chen et al., 2021). A commercial “Taiwan Acacia Cough Tea” made from standardized leaf material is now sold in health‑food stores, indicating renewed market interest. Ongoing ethnobotanical surveys continue to document these practices among Hakka, Amis and Tagalog communities, and the plant’s well‑characterized flavonoids and tannins make it a candidate for future drug‑discovery projects.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
- Timber (sawn lumber) from the heartwood; charcoal.
Industrial and craft applications:
- High-density wood used for construction, flooring, furniture, tool handles, carving, and musical instrument parts; also processed into charcoal and used as fuelwood. Not a commercial source of timber internationally, but widely used domestically/regionally in its native and introduced range.
Properties relevant to use:
- Wood density around 0.75–0.85 g/cm³; yellowish-brown heartwood with fine to medium texture; moderate durability in outdoor use; suitable density and hardness for carving and turned goods; carbonized wood suitable for fuelwood and charcoal due to density.
Sustainability and sourcing:
- Fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing legume used in erosion control, reforestation, and woodlot plantings; supplies are mainly from plantation thinning/maintenance rather than long-rotation commercial forestry; individual or community-scale harvesting typical.
