Ulex europaeus, also known as gorse, common gorse, furze or whin, is an evergreen shrub native to the British Isles and Western Europe. It can grow up to 2-3 meters tall and has green spines on its stems and leaves. The flowers are yellow and have a coconut scent, while the fruit is a dark purplish-brown legume containing small black seeds. This plant is adapted to survive fires and has a tap root and lateral and adventitious roots. It has been introduced to other parts of the world, including the Americas, New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia, where it is considered an invasive species. Biological pest control is used to manage its spread. Ulex europaeus is also used for hedging, groundcover, and as a food source for livestock. Its seeds are used to identify rare individuals with the "Bombay phenotype" and its lectin is used as a marker for human vascular endothelial cells. This plant also has the ability to fix nitrogen into the soil.
