General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Timber for construction, carpentry, joinery, tool handles, and turned articles; posts and poles; general-purpose lumber and planks.

Industrial and craft applications:
Used for general carpentry and joinery. Reported for tool handles, turned objects, and musical instruments, and for the bodies of traditional drums. The heartwood is durable and resistant to termites and fungal decay, which supports its use in exterior posts and fence posts. The wood is reported to season well with limited checking, and it machines and turns cleanly; it planes and polishes to a good finish. Nail holding is moderate, as the wood can split when nailed near edges.

Wood and fiber:
Reported as a light hardwood (density approximately 560–700 kg/m³ at 12% moisture content, depending on sample). Fiber length is reported at approximately 2.4–2.5 mm, within the range useful for paper pulp fibers. Heartwood is brown to purplish brown with distinct grain and interlocked to wavy structure, yielding a decorative figure that suits furniture and interior joinery; sapwood is pale and distinct. Shrinkage is moderate; movement in service is described as small to moderate. The wood is amenable to steam-bending.

Colorants and tanning:
No documented non-wood products; no reports of extraction or use of dye, tannin, gum, or resin from Baphia pubescens have been found.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
No culinary uses are documented for this taxon.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
No fragrance, cosmetic, or perfumery applications are documented.

Properties relevant to use:
Light, stable hardwood with good finishing characteristics; interlocked to wavy grain; moderate shrinkage; good decay resistance. Fiber dimensions are within common ranges for paper pulp. Physical–mechanical property values (e.g., strength and elasticity) vary by source; they are not standardized across references.

Standards and regulation:
Timber is handled under general forestry and timber trade regulations in the species’ range; no species-specific standards identified. For structural uses, local or regional building codes and grading rules (e.g., national standards) apply.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Listed as “Least Concern” in global assessments; however, like many tropical timbers, it is harvested from natural forest and may be subject to local population pressure. Traceability varies by source. For exterior uses and in-service durability, standard preservation or design detailing can extend service life.
