Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Bennett et al., 2021 record the use of a strong leaf infusion or decoction of Barringtonia acutangula as a wash for fevers and as a mild tea for stomachaches. In India, the Indian Medicinal Plants Compendium lists infusions and decoctions of bark and roots used as antidiarrheals and as emmenagogues, while Gatherer’s 1994 monograph cites leaf poultices and washes for rheumatism and fever. In Burma, Watt’s 1889 Dictionary describes a strong infusion or decoction of root bark employed as an emetic and general tonic. These mentions focus on two principal plant parts: the leaves (for poultices and washes) and the root bark or roots (for infusions, decoctions, and washes); seeds are used in India as a strong expectorant infusion or decoction for asthma and cough, as recorded by Gatherer.
