Ethnobotanical Uses
In parts of China, especially Yunnan, the leaves of Viburnum cylindricum (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) are traditionally infused into a mild tea or made into a simple decoction to ease coughs and bronchitis. Local healers in the Lahu, Dai, and Yi communities use a 10‑15 minute decoction of the leaves with water as a throat‑soothing remedy, and they also use a fresh maceration of the leaves for washing skin sores. In the Eastern Himalaya of Bhutan and Nepal, dried leaves are steeped longer, about 20–30 minutes, for throat complaints and as an astringent rinse for sore mouths, while fresh leaves are pounded and applied as a poultice to small wounds. The fruits are gathered for marmalade‑like preserves; the Lahu of Yunnan crush and cook them with sugar or honey into a thick conserve that helps with digestive upset when taken in small spoonfuls. In the Eastern Himalaya of India, leaf and twig infusions and washes are reported for mouth and throat irritation and as a wound wash, following the ethnobotanical records of Pradhan et al., while the Naxi of northwest Yunnan note a cold maceration of fruits for “stomach fire,” as documented by Pei (1995). Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, ethnobotanical literature records that related Viburnum species are taken as teas and decoctions for spasms and menstrual cramps (Moerman, 1998; De la Barrera et al., 2014), with Bennett et al. (2021) providing a modern synthesis; while these references do not name V. cylindricum directly, they confirm that infusions and decoctions of Viburnum leaves and bark are a documented regional practice.
A practical recipe – mild leaf tea for coughs: steep 6–10 g of dried leaves in 250 ml of just‑boiled water for 10–15 minutes, then strain; drink up to three cups a day for several days. A complementary recipe – fruit infusion for digestive aid: lightly crush fresh, ripe fruits; add 1–2 tablespoons of crushed fruit to 150 ml of hot water, steep for 5–8 minutes, then sweeten to taste and drink a small cup after meals. Safety note: the berries are tart and may cause mild gastrointestinal upset if overeaten; the leaf tea should be avoided in pregnancy and in anyone with known allergy to Viburnum; start with a small dose and stop if side effects appear.
The leaves are rich in caffeic acid derivatives such as chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid, common in the Adoxaceae and known for anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant effects that plausibly support the respiratory and astringent uses; the fruits contain ascorbic acid and anthocyanins, which may contribute to gastrointestinal soothing. While V. cylindricum has not been developed into modern phytomedicines in the same way as closely related Viburnum, its mild leaf tea and fruit infusion remain in active use in China, Bhutan, Nepal, and parts of India, and the plant is increasingly cultivated on small farms for its edible, aromatic fruits.
