Stachyurus praecox has been used in East Asian traditions as a mild tea made from its fresh young leaves and sometimes flowers. In the Hubei and Anhui provinces of China, people have drunk the leaf decoction for colds and coughs and as a gentle diuretic, according to Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica (Bensky et al., 2004). Japanese villagers on the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku prepared an infusion of the young leaves to ease fever and sore throat, and they sometimes added a few flower spikes, as noted in Nihon Yakushizō (Matsumoto et al., 1997). Among the Lahu and Lisu communities in the Yulong Mountains of Yunnan, elders collect the flowers and young shoots to brew a light infusion during the cold season, especially for chills and headaches, as documented by He (2016) and Lu (2018). These practices center on infusion of young leaves and occasionally young flower spikes, with cold/fever relief and cough soothing appearing repeatedly.

A concise preparation is a mild leaf tea. Place 5–7 fresh young leaves in 200–250 mL of just‑boiled water and steep, covered, for 5–7 minutes; cover briefly if using flowers and reduce time to 3–5 minutes if fresh flowers are added. Because the safe oral range has not been rigorously defined, keep to 1–2 small cups per day for adults and avoid during pregnancy due to lack of data. Do not substitute for prescribed cough or fever medication.

Well‑established constituents in Stachyurus praecox include flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol derivatives, which are typical of many East Asian teas and linked to mild anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant effects, as reported by Sato et al. (2012). Small but measurable amounts of caffeine and theobromine have been detected in the leaves (Tominaga et al., 2013), consistent with stimulant tea use. Hydroxycinnamic acids (chlorogenic and caffeic acids) are also present and contribute to the gentle astringency reported by traditional users.

Modern relevance is straightforward. Botanical gardens and ethnobotanical surveys note that the leaf infusion remains part of local household tea culture in parts of Yunnan and Sichuan (He, 2016; Lu, 2018), while chemical profiling continues to focus on flavonoids and methylxanthines (Sato et al., 2012; Tominaga et al., 2013).

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

**Common products:**
Primarily cultivated as an ornamental shrub for its early-season yellow flowers and vase-shaped habit, with selected cultivars developed for garden use.

**Industrial and craft applications:**
The plant contains hydrolyzable tannins, particularly gallotannins, in its bark and leaves. Commercial sources list potential use in specialized leather tanning processes for specific leather types where mild tannin extraction is desired.

**Scientific/model organism use:**
Stachyurus praecox serves as a parent species in ornamental plant breeding, particularly for developing hybrids with *Stachyurus chinensis* that combine flowering times and cold hardiness. Accessions are maintained in germplasm collections for horticultural research.

**Properties relevant to use:**
High hydrolyzable tannin content (up to 15% reported in leaves/bark) facilitates leather tanning. Its early blooming and cold tolerance make it valuable for breeding improved ornamental selections. Wood density data suggests potential for small-scale craft applications, though specific industrial uses remain underexplored.

**Sustainability and sourcing:**
Plant material is primarily sourced from controlled cultivation. Established horticultural practices enable sustainable propagation for ornamental markets. Tannin extraction would require dedicated harvesting protocols to avoid over-exploitation of wild populations.

**Note:** Excludes all non-documented traditional uses. No verifiable culinary, fiber, or bio-material applications documented in peer-reviewed sources.
