The plant contains sesquiterpene lactones, such as germacranolides and eudesmanolides, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. These compounds are also responsible for the plant's bitter taste and may act as a defense mechanism against herbivores. It is recommended to handle the plant with gloves to avoid skin irritation.
