Suggest a correction!Cypripedium L. is the sole holarctic genus of tribe Cypripedieae (Orchidaceae: Cypripedioideae), with about 52 accepted species widely distributed across temperate Eurasia and North America from lowland wetlands to alpine meadows (POWO, 2024; GBIF, 2024). The type is Cypripedium calceolus L., historically treated as the type of the genus. The classic slipper orchid habit—a terrestrial, rhizomatous perennial bearing one to few large, plicate leaves and a terminal, often showy flower with a pouch-like labellum—unites the group, but flower size, petal posture, and ovary indumentum provide reliable diagnostic differences among species (Cox and Jones, 1999). The ovary is inferior to semi-inferior and typically three-locular with numerous minute dust seeds that lack endosperm, reflecting the orchid seed syndrome (Arditti and Ghani, 2000).
Diversity peaks in East Asia (eastern Himalaya to Japan and the Russian Far East) and western North America, with several European and eastern North American species forming narrower clades (Albert and Chase, 2006). Species occupy mesic to boggy habitats from sea level to above 4000 m, from boreal peatlands and fens to subalpine scree; many are confined to specific substrates such as limestone (e.g., C. calceolus) or serpentine. Floral rewards vary: several North American species offer nectar, whereas Asian taxa are often food-deceptive or offer pseudonectar (Fujita, 2011), supporting diverse pollinators including bees and flies; seed dispersal is passive. The base chromosome number is x=10, with extensive polyploidy, especially in East Asia (Murata, 1972).
Taxonomically, Cypripedium is consistently accepted as monophyletic and placed in Cypripedioideae (Chase et al., 2015). Most contemporary treatments recognize a single genus without formal subgeneric sections, although historically sectional schemes have been proposed (Albert and Chase, 2006). Species transferred historically to genera such as Selenipedium belong elsewhere; the main recircumscription during the last century expanded Cypripedium by reabsorption of segregate genera and clarified section delimitations (Sheviak, 2002). Species limits remain fluid in parts of the range, particularly in eastern Asia and the Americas, where hybridization and polyploidy blur boundaries (Cox and Jones, 1999). The horticultural trade seeks C. calceolus and C. reginae for alpine and woodland gardens, yet most taxa are calcifuge and slow to establish; hybridization and tissue culture have expanded availability (Ramsay and Stewart, 1998). Several European and North American taxa are CITES-listed and endangered, and many East Asian populations face habitat loss and climate pressures (IUCN SSC Orchid Specialist Group, 2016). Global assessments remain uneven, and refined phylogenies integrating genome-scale data are needed to stabilize species boundaries in clade-rich regions.
