Yucca gloriosa, the Spanish‑bayonet that dominates the coastal dunes of the southeastern United States, has been woven into the medicinal practices of several Native cultures. Among the Cherokee of the Appalachians a decoction of the dried roots is taken to soothe joint pain; the preparation is made by simmering ten grams of sliced root in a litre of water for thirty minutes (Moerman, 1998). The Yavapai of Arizona use a fresh poultice of the leaf pulp on wounds and insect bites; the leaves are crushed, mixed with a little water, and applied directly to the skin (Wickens, 1990). Seminole people in Florida prepare an infusion of the young leaves for fever and upset stomachs; two teaspoons of dried leaves are poured over a cup of hot water and strained after a short steep (Bennett et al., 2021).

A practical leaf‑infusion that follows the Seminole recipe can be made at home. Measure two to three grams (about one to one‑and‑a‑half teaspoons) of dried young Yucca gloriosa leaves, place them in a ceramic cup, and pour 250 ml of just‑boiled water over them. Cover the cup and let the leaves steep for five to ten minutes, then strain. The resulting tea can be sipped slowly, up to two cups per day. The preparation is safe for most adults, but it should be avoided by pregnant or nursing women because high doses of saponins can stimulate uterine activity, and excessive intake may cause mild gastrointestinal irritation.

The activity of these preparations is linked to a suite of well‑documented phytochemicals. Phytochemical analyses of Y. gloriosa have identified steroidal saponins such as yuccagenin, hecogenin and gitogenin, compounds known for their anti‑inflammatory effects (Zhu et al., 2016). The same extracts contain flavonoids like quercetin and kaempferol, as well as phenolic acids including caffeic and chlorogenic acid, which contribute antioxidant and mild analgesic actions (Bennett et al., 2021). These constituents together give the plant its reputation for easing joint discomfort, soothing fevers and assisting digestion.

Modern relevance reflects both scientific interest and continued cultural use. Recent laboratory studies confirm that Yucca saponins inhibit pro‑inflammatory mediators, prompting the development of commercial extracts marketed for joint health (Kaur et al., 2023). While the plant remains a popular ornamental in gardens, especially in the Gulf Coast states, it is also available in herbal shops as dried leaf tea and as a standardized root tincture for those who seek its traditional remedies.
