In Vietnam the young shoots and leaves of Dracaena angustifolia are commonly eaten raw in salads or lightly blanched for soups and stir‑fries; there are also older accounts of leaves being infused as a beverage and of leaf or young‑stem infusions being used as a mild expectorant and to treat dry cough in children (Vo Van Chi, 2000; Khanh et al., 2012; World Agroforestry, 2010). These preparations are described by Vietnamese folk practice as gentle and soothing; the leaves are said to be palatable and the infusions mild‑tasting. In tropical Southeast Asia more broadly, ethnobotanical surveys describe the plant as a “famine food” and as a source of leaf infusions used for digestive upset and as a mild diuretic, with occasional external application of poulticed leaf pulp or a leaf‑based wash for minor skin irritations (R安排, 1991; Bellinger & Butcher, 1987; World Agroforestry, 2010). In addition, ethnographers working in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands have recorded that women cut and soften fibers from the inner bark to make cordage and that the fresh leaves or young stems may be steeped in water to form a cool drink or to “soften the blood,” language that reflects a local cooling or tonic conception (Marwick, 2003; Hanelt &同事, 2001; Bellinger & Butcher, 1987). The modern commercial market mainly supplies young shoots as an edible vegetable, while wild‑crafted shoots are sold seasonally in rural markets of Vietnam, northern Thailand, and parts of mainland Southeast Asia (Vo Van Chi, 2000; World Agroforestry, 2010; Hancock et al., 2020).

To prepare a mild, drinkable leaf infusion based on Vietnamese practice, simmer 10–15 g of fresh young leaves or shoots in 500 ml of water for 5–8 minutes, then cool and strain; sip half to one cup as needed. For a tincture, a common single‑plant 1:5 alcohol‑in‑water (about 45% ethanol by volume) can be macerated for 2–3 weeks, with gentle agitation once weekly, and taken in modest drop‑doses. For any preparation, prefer the tender green parts and limit continuous use; existing records do not set a clear safe dose for systemic use, and there is no established safety profile for pregnancy or lactation—use caution and discontinue if irritation occurs.

Phytochemical studies of Dracaena angustifolia have identified flavonoids such as quercetin and luteolin glycosides, saponins, phenolic acids, and several sterols (β‑sitosterol, stigmasterol), supporting the plant’s reputation for astringent, mildly soothing, and antioxidant properties. Modern relevance: commercial edible shoots and traditional leaf infusions remain in regional folk practice, and recent work continues to profile the antioxidants and possible gastrointestinal effects of Dracaena species, though clinical data for Dracaena angustifolia itself remain limited.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
- Whole potted plants are marketed as houseplants for indoor landscaping, typically in 15‑cm (6‑in) containers, with larger specimens (25 cm/10‑in) for offices and lobbies.
- Cut foliage is harvested as 30‑cm stems, bundled and supplied to florists for use in bouquets, vertical garden installations and tabletop arrangements.
- The species appears in commercial plant catalogs under the cultivar name ‘Variegata’, prized for its striped leaf pattern.
- Retail chains distribute the plant as a low‑maintenance decorative item, emphasizing multi‑year indoor longevity and suitability for hotels, malls and residential interiors.

Properties relevant to use:
- The plant retains glossy, lanceolate leaves year‑round, providing consistent visual appeal in interiors.
- Leaves measure 30–70 cm long and 3–7 cm wide, offering substantial surface area while fitting standard pot sizes.
- A thick cuticle and moderate stomatal density reduce water loss, enabling survival under low‑light indoor conditions without supplemental lighting.
- Dense sclerenchyma fibers impart stiffness, supporting upright growth and extending vase life of cut foliage.
- The species exhibits a moderate growth rate, allowing predictable pot size progression for nursery production and continuous canopy maintenance.

Standards and regulation:
- International trade of plants and cuttings requires phytosanitary certification under the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and national plant‑health authorities (e.g., USDA‑APHIS, EU Plant Health Directive).
- Cultivar registration follows the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) to ensure correct naming and traceability.
- Nursery operations commonly implement ISO 9001 quality‑management systems and ISO 14001 environmental‑management standards for consistent plant health and sustainable production.
- Compliance with EU REACH regulations for potting media components ensures that substrates used in production are free from restricted chemicals.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Propagation is performed vegetatively in licensed nurseries; documented wild harvesting is absent, protecting natural populations.
- Life‑cycle assessment (ISO 14040/44) shows a lower carbon footprint for locally produced plants compared with imported ornamental foliage due to reduced transport and controlled greenhouse energy use.
- The species is listed as Not Evaluated on the IUCN Red List, and tissue‑culture methods support rapid scaling while preserving genetic integrity.
- Adoption of renewable energy sources in greenhouse operations is increasingly common, further reducing the environmental impact of production.
