Lily of the valley, also known as Convallaria majalis, is a woodland flowering plant with sweetly scented, pendent, bell-shaped white flowers. It is native to Asia and Europe and is also found in North America. The plant contains cardiac glycosides, making it highly poisonous if consumed by humans or animals. Other names for this plant include May bells, Our Lady's tears, and Mary's tears. It is often used in perfumes and has a long history of use in traditional medicine. Lily of the valley is also a popular flower for weddings and celebrations, and has cultural significance in various countries. It has been featured in literature, music, and art, and even in popular TV shows. In 2022, it was the theme of a poem by the poet laureate in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.

Germination/Propagation Top

Suggest a correction or add new data!
Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment.
Requires Darkness: These seeds need to be covered with soil or otherwise kept in the dark to germinate properly. Light inhibits their germination process.
Pulpy Coat Inhibits Germination: Seeds with a pulpy or fleshy outer coat need to have this material removed by soaking and rinsing in clean water daily for about a week. The inhibitory substances in the pulp are thus washed away, and germination rates improve.
