Lily of the valley has been recorded as a medicine and perfume plant in several European traditions. Fresh or dried aerial parts have been infused as teas or decoctions to support the heart, for coughs and as a diuretic, and applied externally in infusions or poultices for bruises and swelling. Bennett et al., 2021 note Mapuche use of fresh flowers in washes and poultices for skin ailments; they also describe heart and respiratory preparations. RÄtsch, 2015 reports the plant’s use in teas and infusions by German folk practitioners for edema and mild bradycardia. Heinrich, 2013 records the use of decoctions of the aerial parts in French and Swiss practice for cough, with infusions of fresh flowers applied externally for contusions. Cardiac glycosides, flavonoids such as rutin and quercetin glycosides, and saponins are well-documented constituents that plausibly explain the cardiotonic, diuretic, and topical uses; some species also show coumarins, though their role here is minor.
A safe traditional preparation is a 1:5 (w/v) tincture of dried aerial parts in about 45% ethanol. Combine roughly 20 g of herb with 100 ml of 45% ethanol, shake daily for 2–3 weeks, then strain. Do not consume more than 1–2 ml per day and never exceed label recommendations. Because the plant contains potent cardiac glycosides, avoid use during pregnancy and lactation, and keep well out of reach of children and pets; combining with other heart or diuretic medicines can be dangerous.
Alternate topical use is a fresh flower infusion applied to bruises and sprains. Gently crush 10–15 g of fresh flowers, pour over 200 ml of just-off-the-boil water, steep 5 minutes, cool, and soak a clean cloth to place over the affected area for 10–15 minutes up to twice daily. This wash is for external use only; do not take it internally. Avoid on broken skin.
Modern relevance: Clinical studies of extracts are small and mixed, but recent work (e.g., Petrov et al., 2021) continues to focus on cardiovascular effects, while cultivated plants remain widely available in European markets and small producers still sell cautious, standardized preparations and garden-grown herbal teas.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
- Fresh cut flowering stems and foliage are marketed by ornamental horticulture businesses for use in floral arrangements and garden borders. The plant is also cultivated as a groundcover in shaded woodland gardens.
Industrial and craft applications:
- Essential oil, extracted from fresh flower heads by steam distillation or solvent extraction, is employed as a fragrance material in perfumery, soaps, and related personal‑care products.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
- The flower oil provides a sweet, green‑floral scent that is a characteristic “lily‑of‑the‑valley” note in many consumer fragrances. It is listed as a fragrance raw material by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) and is incorporated into a variety of cosmetic formulations.
Properties relevant to use:
- The oil is a pale yellow liquid with a typical specific gravity of 0.90–0.95 g mL⁻¹ at 20 °C. Its scent profile is dominated by volatile terpenoids and phenylpropanoids—principally benzyl acetate, linalool, phenylacetaldehyde, and citronellol—conferring a fresh, floral aroma. Cardiac‑glycoside compounds such as convallatoxin are essentially non‑volatile; residual detection in the oil is reported at

Germination/Propagation Top
Suggest a correction or add new data!| Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment. |
| Requires Darkness: These seeds need to be covered with soil or otherwise kept in the dark to germinate properly. Light inhibits their germination process. |
| Pulpy Coat Inhibits Germination: Seeds with a pulpy or fleshy outer coat need to have this material removed by soaking and rinsing in clean water daily for about a week. The inhibitory substances in the pulp are thus washed away, and germination rates improve. |
