Polyscias scutellaria, also known as shield aralia or plum aralia, is a tropical shrub or small tree that can reach heights of 2-6 meters. It is native to the Southwest Pacific islands and is commonly grown in gardens. The leaves and root of this plant have antiseptic and deodorant properties. In ancient times, native Indonesians used the leaf of this plant as a substitute for bowls due to its shape and durability. In modern Indonesian cuisine, shield aralia is used as a unique food packaging and its shredded leaves can be mixed with meat or fish to mask any unpleasant odors.
