Among traditional healers in northern China, especially in mountainous regions of Shaanxi and Sichuan, practitioners prepare infusions of the leaves and decoctions of the roots for a range of supportive uses. In community pharmacopeias and Chinese materia medica summaries, the dried leaf is commonly steeped as a gentle daily tea and the root is boiled in water as a decoction for several days during convalescence (Zhang, 1996). In Shanxi’s Shanxi herbal tradition, infusions of the leaves are also taken as a cooling beverage in spring, while root decoctions are used as a tonic by local mountain communities (Zhang, 1996). Similar practices recur among Korean herbalists and ethnomedical surveys in the People’s Republic of China, where leaf infusions and root decoctions are recorded as everyday preparations and convalescent drinks, respectively (Heinrich et al., 2004; WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific, 2011).
For a simple leaf tea, the traditional Chinese formulation cited by Zhang (1996) typically uses 1–2 g of dried leaves with 200–250 ml of just-boiled water, steeped for 10 minutes before drinking, often taken in the morning to afternoon. The WHO Western Pacific herbal review describes standard home decoction of 10–15 g of sliced roots boiled with water to about one-third volume and taken in divided doses over the day (WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific, 2011). Because Eleutherococcus belongs to the Araliaceae, which includes ginseng, this plant can interact with anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, and corticosteroids, and it should be avoided during pregnancy unless a qualified practitioner advises otherwise (Heinrich et al., 2004).
Laboratory studies of Eleutherococcus giraldii have consistently identified caffeic acid and related phenylpropanoids, which are widely reported in the leaves and roots, as well as lignans such as syringaresinol and its glycosides, and a suite of triterpenoid saponins that are common in Eleutherococcus (Song et al., 2010; Li et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2014). These well-established phytochemicals plausibly underpin the tonic and supportive activities noted in traditional practice (Zhang, 1996).
Modern relevance is evident in continued field reports and the availability of E. giraldii and related Eleutherococcus extracts in regional commerce, alongside basic pharmacological work investigating antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects in vitro (Song et al., 2010; Li et al., 2013).
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Leaves and young shoots are collected and dried as a tea-like beverage base under the name ciwujia (刺五加). Tea formulation typically involves whole or cut leaves, with mechanical drying (solar or low-temperature) and optional mixing with other plant materials. Commercial offerings are sold as leaves, tea bags, or leaf extracts for beverage ingredients.
Industrial and craft applications:
Leaves have been evaluated as a source of natural brown to yellow-brown dyes for protein fibers. Documentation reports dye extraction by aqueous or alkaline boiling of leaves, followed by mordanting with aluminum or iron salts to obtain brown shades on wool and silk. Commercial dyestuff preparation may use standardized leaf extracts or powders.
Colorants and tanning:
Historically used for tanning animal hides, typically with leaf extracts or ground leaf material. Extracts reported to contain tannins (estimated at roughly 7–12% in dried leaves) that have been used in leather processing as a brown dye and for their protein-binding properties. Use is recorded for both small-scale craft tanning and experimental tannery trials.
Wood and fiber:
Not used as timber due to shrub habit and small stem dimensions.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
Not a fragrance raw material; leaf extracts have been used as cosmetic ingredients for color or mild astringency in creams and lotions.
Properties relevant to use:
Alkaline aqueous extracts yield brown color on protein fibers due to phenolic compounds, including chlorogenic acid and related phenylpropanoids; mordant selection influences shade intensity and fastness. Dried leaves contain condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins) and flavonoids; iron mordants deepen color toward brown/black. Tea-like beverages are characterized by a green–brown infusion color and astringent profile.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Widely distributed and categorized as Least Concern (IUCN). Commercial supply is primarily wild-collected, with cultivation efforts in China; harvest typically targets leaf shoots, minimizing root disturbance. Sustainable practices include seasonal harvesting, avoiding uprooting, and adherence to regional collection regulations.
