Among the Cherokee of the southeastern United States, Miller (1973) recorded the preparation of a mild tea from the aerial parts of Huperzia lucidula to relieve cough and fever. The same species was employed by the Iroquois of the northeastern woodlands as a decoction of the whole plant for the treatment of intermittent fevers and as a blood‑purifying tonic (Moerman, 1998). In the Upper Great Lakes region, the Menominee people made a poultice from fresh, crushed leaves applied to bruises and minor burns, and a second poultice from the dried stems used for skin eruptions (Hart, 1977). These three independent accounts share a pattern of using the green, leafy material in either a tea or a direct external application, highlighting the plant’s role in both internal and topical healing traditions.

A practical and safe tea can be prepared by steeping 2 g of dried, ground aerial parts in 250 ml of freshly boiled water for 5–10 minutes, then straining. This mild infusion is traditionally taken two to three times daily for coughs or mild fevers. Practitioners advise not to exceed three cups per day, and it is contraindicated for pregnant women because the alkaloids may stimulate uterine activity. The poultice for skin irritation is made by mixing a handful of fresh, crushed leaves with a small amount of warm water to a paste, spreading the paste on the affected area, and covering with a clean cloth for 20‑30 minutes; the preparation should be rinsed with clean water afterwards to avoid prolonged skin contact with the plant’s bitter compounds.

The therapeutic activity of Huperzia lucidula is linked to well‑characterized phytochemicals, most notably the sesquiterpene alkaloid huperzine A, a potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitor documented in several chromatographic studies of the species (Bennett et al., 2021). The plant also contains the related lycophyte alkaloids lycopsamine and lycodine, both of which have been isolated from H. lucidula and may contribute to anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial actions reported in traditional practice.

Modern research has rekindled interest in Huperzia lucidula because of the commercial value of huperzine A for Alzheimer’s‑related drug development. While wild harvesting remains modest, cultivated material is increasingly available for both scientific investigation and niche herbal markets. The plant continues to be gathered by Indigenous communities for its folk remedies, and contemporary ethnobotanical surveys continue to document its use alongside expanding pharmacological studies.

Common products:
• Lycopodium spores (sometimes called “lycopodium powder”) are the primary commercial product derived from Huperzia lucidula and related Huperzia species. The powder is a fine, spherical, hydrophobic dust with excellent flow properties.

Industrial and craft applications:
• Dusting and anti-adhesion agent in pharmaceutical capsule filling and tablet coating; added to powders, rubber compounds, and precision metal castings to prevent sticking and improve flow.
• Marker powder in fluidization and particle engineering experiments; used to visualize air and gas flows, tracer studies, and equipment testing.
• Component in abrasives and polishing compounds; employed as a fine abrasive for surfacing and in the photographic industry as an adhesive/binder in roller applications.
• “Lycopodium wire” adhesive in the rubber industry for bonding rollers and repairing defects; historically cited as a reliable adhesion method in leatherworking and bookbinding for fine joins.

Colorants and tanning:
• Not used as a dye or tannin.

Wood and fiber:
• No timber or fiber uses.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
• Occasionally employed as a texture modifier or dust-controlling agent in cosmetics and skin-care powders; not a fragrance raw material.

Properties relevant to use:
• Spherical, monodisperse particles typically around 25–30 μm with smooth, hydrophobic surfaces; low density (~1.04 g/cm³) and dry flow; very low hygroscopicity; good lubricity and anti-agglomeration properties; low dustiness and controllable abrasivity.

Sustainability and sourcing:
• Commercial material is primarily wild-harvested and typically supplied by specialist chemical houses. Wild collection can degrade moss mats and is locally regulated; sustainable practices include habitat protection, regulated quotas, and minimal-impact harvesting.
