Pinus brutia, also known as the Turkish pine, is a medium-sized tree native to the eastern Mediterranean region, with the majority of its range in Turkey. It is also found in southeastern Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. The tree has a distinctive orange-red bark and bright green to yellowish-green needles. Its cones are stout and heavy, opening slowly over the course of a year to release its seeds. There are several subspecies and varieties of Turkish pine, with the Eldar pine being treated as a separate species by some. This tree is resistant to certain pests and is a major host for Thaumetopoea caterpillars. It is widely planted for timber and is also popular as an ornamental tree due to its heat and drought tolerance. The sap of the tree is collected by honey bees, producing a highly valued honey with medicinal benefits. The Turkish pine also holds historical significance as the "Lone Pine" at the ANZAC First World War battle at Gallipoli was of this species.
