Ipomoea pes-caprae has been used for centuries as a coastal remedy, especially in tropical regions where the trailing vines are abundant. In Polynesia, the crushed leaves were traditionally applied as a poultice for bruises, sprains, and wounds, as noted by Whistler in his ethnobotanical surveys of the Pacific islands. In the Philippines, decoctions of the leaves and aerial parts were taken to treat urinary complaints and rheumatism, with detailed preparations recorded in sources such as Perry’s Medicinal Plants of the Philippines. In parts of South and Southeast Asia, the plant was similarly employed topically for stings and bites, and as an anti-inflammatory compress on sore joints, as documented by Parry in his broader review of Ayurvedic and folk pharmacopoeias. Across these contexts, the leaves were the primary plant part used, though in some coastal communities the stems were included in the poultice when leaves were scarce, according to the comprehensive accounts of traditional uses compiled by Rogers and colleagues in a regional ethnobotany handbook.

A practical preparation for a mild, topical infusion can be made by taking a generous handful of fresh leaves (about 20–30 g), rinsing them, and adding to 500 mL of recently boiled water. Cover and steep for 15–20 minutes, then strain. The warm liquid is used as a compress on strained muscles, bruises, or insect bites, applied several times a day for 2–3 days as needed. Because Ipomoea pes-caprae may irritate sensitive skin, discontinue use if redness develops and avoid contact with eyes; it is not recommended during pregnancy or for internal use without professional guidance.

Phytochemical analyses of the species have consistently identified coumarins such as scopoletin and umbelliferone, pentacyclic triterpenes including betulinic and ursolic acids, sterols such as stigmasterol and β-sitosterol, and flavonoid glycosides like quercetin-3-O-rutinoside and kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside. These constituents help explain the documented anti-inflammatory and wound-care actions traditionally attributed to the plant.

Modern relevance remains strong: laboratory studies continue to investigate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic potential of extracts and isolated constituents, while dried leaves, poultice mixes, and topical creams or tinctures based on the plant are available in parts of the Philippines, Polynesia, and South Asia for local use.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Seed mucilage (polysaccharide hydrocolloid) used as a biodegradable binder or thickener in eco-friendly, compostable films and paper coatings; also tested as a film-forming excipient in controlled-release pharmaceutical matrices. Plant fiber, typically from stems, utilized for cordage and traditional weaving.

Industrial and craft applications:
Cellulose-rich fiber suitable for papermaking and pulp-based boards. Mucilage evaluated as an aqueous binder in composite paper products and in bioplastics, often as a partial substitute for petroleum-derived polymers; such films can meet criteria for industrial composting under ASTM D6400 or EN 13432 when formulated appropriately. Fibers used for rope and textile weaving.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Mucilage employed as a stabilizer or thickener in foods and beverages, functioning as a hydrocolloid; it also serves as a fermentation feedstock for microbial production of chemicals.

Colorants and tanning:
Not widely reported for dye or tannin use; colorants are not a documented use.

Wood and fiber:
Wood not a primary product; stems provide bast fiber used for cordage and weaving.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
Not a reported source of fragrance; cosmetics are not a documented use.

Properties relevant to use:
High polysaccharide content of seed mucilage provides viscosity and film-forming ability; β-1,4-linked mannan in glucomannans contributes to film formation and biodegradability; stem fibers contain cellulose that yields pulp suitable for paper products; mucilage is water-soluble, conferring binder and stabilizer functionality.

Standards and regulation:
Mucilage for food additives must be authorized under national food additive rules; films claiming industrial compostability should meet ASTM D6400 or EN 13432 (e.g., disintegration/composting rate, ecotoxicity).

Sustainability and sourcing:
Typically harvested from coastal and ruderal habitats with low land-use competition; wild collection predominates; developing cultivation and standardized mucilage extraction could reduce processing variability and improve yield stability.
