Ipomoea pes-caprae has been used for centuries as a coastal remedy, especially in tropical regions where the trailing vines are abundant. In Polynesia, the crushed leaves were traditionally applied as a poultice for bruises, sprains, and wounds, as noted by Whistler in his ethnobotanical surveys of the Pacific islands. In the Philippines, decoctions of the leaves and aerial parts were taken to treat urinary complaints and rheumatism, with detailed preparations recorded in sources such as Perry’s Medicinal Plants of the Philippines. In parts of South and Southeast Asia, the plant was similarly employed topically for stings and bites, and as an anti-inflammatory compress on sore joints, as documented by Parry in his broader review of Ayurvedic and folk pharmacopoeias.
