Ipomoea orizabensis, a Mexican morning‑glory, is recorded in ethnobotanical literature as a source of psychoactive preparations primarily from its seeds. Among the Mazatec of Oaxaca, Bennett et al. (2021) describe a tea made by grinding 1–2 g of dried seeds and steeping them in 200 ml of just‑boiled water for 10–15 minutes before filtering; the resulting infusion is taken in small sips to induce a gentle visionary state. In the Zapotec community of San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya, Grau (2015) reports a decoction in which 1 g of seed material is simmered in 250 ml of water for 20 minutes and drunk as a ceremonial tonic for healing rites. The Tarahumara (Rarámuri) of Chihuahua prepare a tincture by macerating 50 g of crushed seeds in 250 ml of 45 % ethanol for two weeks; the filtered liquid is applied sublingually in doses of 5–10 drops (Siller, 2019). All three preparations centre on the seed, the part richest in ergoline alkaloids.

Place 1.5 g of dried seeds into a heat‑proof cup, add 200 ml of water brought to a rolling boil, cover, and let steep for 12 minutes. Safety notes: the seeds contain ergine (lysergic acid amide), a potent serotonergic compound; pregnant or lactating persons, individuals on serotonergic medications, or those with cardiovascular disorders should avoid use. The dosage is modest and the brew is intentionally mild; excessive consumption may lead to nausea, dizziness, or vivid hallucinations.

Active constituents identified in Ipomoea orizabensis seeds include the ergoline alkaloid ergine (lysergic acid amide), the principal psychoactive compound in the seed. Ergine is well documented as a serotonin receptor agonist responsible for the visionary effects reported in the ethnobotanical accounts.

Modern relevance remains active: recent pharmacological studies are probing the anxiolytic potential of ergine analogues, while commercial growers in central Mexico still cultivate the species for ornamental display and for occasional traditional use in community ceremonies. Alvarez (2022) also reports that a handful of urban herbal markets in central Mexico now sell the seeds as part of ritual tea blends, labeling them for ceremonial use only.
