Luvunga sarmentosa

Traditional preparations of Luvunga sarmentosa focus on infusions and topical applications that draw on its aromatic fruit. In northeastern India, Garo and Mizo peoples prepare a warm fruit infusion as a digestive aid and to ease colicky discomfort (Brahmapurkar & Shinde, 2022). In Thailand, both the fruit and leaves are used in hot water to support digestion and as a mild stimulant in convalescence (Kusuma et al., 2020). Among communities in the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and Chittagong Hill Tracts, a poultice of crushed leaves is applied to wounds and swellings (Ali, 2012; Bose et al., 1998). Across these regions the active parts are the fruit peel and the leaf, and preparations are kept mild to avoid excess essential‑oil irritation.

One practical recipe is a mild digestive tea. Simmer 1–2 g of sliced, dried fruit in 250 ml of water for 5 minutes; cover and let stand for 10 minutes; strain and sip warm after meals. For a 1:5 ethanolic tincture for topical use, macerate 10 g of dried, chopped fruit in 50 ml of 50% ethanol for 4 weeks in a cool, dark place, shaking daily, then strain. In either case, keep doses conservative and avoid long, high‑concentration use in pregnancy and lactation. If you are pregnant, nursing, have liver disease, or take medications—especially benzodiazepines, sedatives, or anti‑coagulants—consult a qualified practitioner before use.

The species contains well‑established aromatic terpenoids that plausibly underlie the traditional actions. Fruit essential oil includes citral (neral and geranial), linalool, geraniol, and α‑pinene (Jiang et al., 2011), while leaves show similar terpenoid profiles plus β‑caryophyllene (Park et al., 2013). These volatile constituents are known to have carminative, antispasmodic, and mild antiseptic properties, matching the tea and poultice applications.

Research continues into Luvunga sermentosa’s essential oil for spasmolytic and antibacterial activity (Jiang et al., 2011; Park et al., 2013), though medicinal products remain limited. The fruits are still used locally for cooking and daily digestive infusions, and tinctures are occasionally produced for topical relief by traditional practitioners.
