Ethnobotanical Uses of Turraea pubescens (Turraea pubescens Hell.) show a long-standing role in home remedies across the tropical Old World, chiefly in East and Southern Africa, Southern India, and Madagascar. In traditional practice in East Africa, a bark decoction is taken to treat “bad blood,” while in southern and eastern Africa leaf infusions and decoctions are used as tonics and to address colds and cough. In Zimbabwe and Malawi, roots are infused or decocted for fever and malaria, and the decoction is also applied to wounds. In South India, a leaf poultice is applied to bruises, according to a report by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, while in Madagascar leaves are decocted and the liquid drunk to treat malaria and fevers. These preparations are described in medicinal plant surveys from those regions. A practical leaf tea is made by infusing one heaping teaspoon of fresh or dried, lightly crushed leaves in 250 ml of freshly boiled water for 8–10 minutes, then straining; the decoction follows the same leaf measure and water, simmered gently for 15 minutes. Use in moderation; a folk dose is about one small cup (150–200 ml) of leaf tea once or twice daily, and traditional use of root decoctions is generally short term. Avoid during pregnancy and while nursing due to limited safety data, and consult a clinician before use alongside malaria or anti-inflammatory medications. Leaf and twig preparations contain limonoids and clerodane diterpenes—bitter principles also found in related Meliaceae—with documented anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, and antimicrobial activities that plausibly underpin the recorded uses. Today, Turraea pubescens is included in several national and regional medicinal plant profiles and appears in herbal products labeled as bitters or malaria adjuncts; it remains in active ethnopharmacological research and continues to be used in home practice across its native range.
