Genus Toxicodendron in Family Anacardiaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Toxicodendron (Mill.) belongs to Anacardiaceae. About 30 species are accepted (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024), ranging across temperate Asia, North America and tropical Southeast Asia. The type species is T. radicans (L.) Kuntze, commonly known as poison ivy (Miller & Mosyakin, 2014).
Plants are shrubs, vines or small trees with alternate, usually trifoliolate or pinnately compound leaves, minute early‑deciduous stipules and a resinous latex. Inflorescences are panicles of small, unisexual, five‑merous flowers with five sepals, five petals, ten stamens and a superior ovary that becomes a single‑seeded drupe (Pell et al., 2011). The urushiol‑rich sap and leaf indumentum give the genus its dermatitis‑inducing quality.
The genus peaks in East Asia, where over half the taxa are narrow endemics of mountainous forests up to ~3000 m (Miller & Mosyakin, 2014). In North America only T. radicans and T. rydbergii occur, while a handful reach tropical China, Vietnam and the Himalayas. This disjunct temperate pattern mirrors classic boreal‑temperate vicariance in Anacardiaceae (Thulin, 2022).
Flowers are pollinated by bees and flies, while drupes are dispersed by birds and mammals. Both deciduous and evergreen habits occur, and many vines reproduce by rooting stems. Chromosome counts of 2n=18 and 2n=28 have been reported, indicating recurrent polyploidy (Miller & Mosyakin, 2014).
Taxonomically, Toxicodendron was split from Rhus because of urushiol and leaf traits (Miller & Mosyakin, 2014). Molecular phylogenies place it as a monophyletic Anacardiaceae sister to Rhus and Schlechtendalia (Pell et al., 2011). Recent work merged Asian lacquer taxa into T. vernicifluum, while others retain them in Rhus (Thulin, 2022). Species limits in SE Asia remain unresolved due to plasticity and limited sampling.
Human relevance centres on dermatitis‑causing species, notably T. radicans and T. diversilobum, which are major allergens in North America. Conversely, T. vernicifluum provides traditional lacquer in East Asia, and a few species are cultivated as ornamentals. No species are harvested for timber; occasional escapes of T. radicans have been recorded outside its native range (POWO, 2024).
Most Toxicodendron species are widespread and not threatened, but several East‑Asian endemics face habitat loss and fragmentation (Miller & Mosyakin, 2014). Resolving remaining taxonomic uncertainties with targeted phylogenomics will enhance conservation planning for these taxa.
