The seed oil extracted from the seeds of Pistacia weinmannifolia has been investigated as a feedstock for biodiesel production. Its fatty‑acid profile, dominated by linoleic and oleic acids, is suitable for conversion to fatty‑acid methyl esters that meet typical biodiesel specifications (e.g., ASTM D6751). The oil can also be employed as a non‑food industrial oil in applications where a highly unsaturated triglyceride oil is required.
Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
The same seed oil is used as a culinary oil. It is harvested by mechanical pressing or solvent extraction and can be used for frying, sautéing, or as an ingredient in processed foods. The oil’s composition provides good oxidative stability for high‑temperature cooking and does not convey medicinal benefits.
Properties relevant to use:
Analytical studies report that the oil consists mainly of linoleic (C18:2) and oleic (C18:1) fatty acids, with a low proportion of saturated fatty acids. It exhibits an iodine value characteristic of highly unsaturated oils (≈130 g I₂ · 100 g⁻¹) and a saponification value typical of triglyceride oils (≈190 mg KOH · g⁻¹). The oil yield under dry‑basis extraction is in the range of 10–15 % w/w. These properties underlie both its suitability for food use and its potential for biodiesel feedstock conversion.
