Prunus × yedoensis, also known as Yoshino cherry, is a hybrid cherry tree that originated in Japan. It is a cross between Prunus speciosa (Oshima cherry) and Prunus pendula f. ascendens (Edo higan). One of its most popular cultivars is 'Somei-yoshino', which is widely planted in temperate regions around the world. This cultivar has inherited the early blooming and large size of Edo higan, as well as the rapid growth and white flowers of Oshima cherry. The oldest known 'Somei-yoshino' tree was planted in Japan in 1775, and it has since been propagated through grafting. In 2019, the genetic information of 'Somei-yoshino' was decoded, revealing that it was a hybrid created over 100 years ago. Yoshino cherry is often used as an ornamental tree for its fragrant, light pink flowers and manageable size. It has many other cultivars, such as 'Mikado-yoshino' and 'America', and has been mistakenly claimed to have originated in South Korea.
