In China the dried root of Pulsatilla cernua is traditionally prepared as a water decoction to treat dysentery, febrile conditions and heat‑toxin complaints; the practice is recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020) and in Bensky et al., 2004. In Korea the same root is steeped as a mild tea or boiled in a decoction for abdominal pain, fever and occasional gastrointestinal upset; the Korean Traditional Herbal Medicine (Lee, 2012) lists the preparation of a root infusion and also describes a fresh‑root poultice applied to skin ulcers. Among Mongolian pastoralists the root is brewed as a tea for gastrointestinal discomfort and a moist poultice of the crushed root is placed on wounds; this knowledge is documented by Luvsannorov et al. (2020) in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.
A concise recipe for a traditional decoction uses 6 g of dried Pulsatilla cernua root, cut into small pieces, added to 200 mL of water, brought to a boil and simmered for 20 minutes. The liquid is then strained and allowed to cool; 50 mL may be taken twice daily for up to five days. Because the plant contains protoanemonin, a lactone that can irritate the digestive tract, it is contraindicated in pregnancy and should not be used for prolonged periods without professional guidance.
The root is known to contain triterpenoid saponins such as pulchinenosides and the toxic lactone protoanemonin, both of which have demonstrated antimicrobial and anti‑inflammatory activity in laboratory studies (Bensky et al., 2004). These constituents plausibly account for the traditional uses against dysentery, fever and wound infections.
Recent pharmacological research has confirmed the anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial effects of Pulsatilla cernua extracts, and the dried herb remains available in herbal shops and is incorporated into modern formulations in China, Korea and Mongolia.
