Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Bennett et al., 2021 note that infusions of Pandanus tectorius leaves have long been employed as an aromatic tonic and for digestive comfort. In traditional Hawaiian practice, Lewu (2000) records that fragrant leaf infusions have been prepared as a soothing beverage and for minor respiratory relief, while external macerations of fresh leaves have been used as a soothing compress for muscle aches. In Samoan and Tongan ethnobotany, particularly as summarized by Ragone in Traditional Trees of Pacific Islands (2006), leaves are steeped as a fragrant tea and sometimes combined with ginger to support digestion after meals. In the Philippines, Tawan-tawan et al. (2011) document leaf infusions and decoctions used in Mindanao for colds and feverish colds. Across Vanuatu, R. Motuk’s field notes (Davidson, 2003) describe leaf decoctions taken as a warming tea for cough and chest congestion. In each case, the preparations rely on chopped or shredded leaves; internal preparations are typically consumed warm as an aromatic infusion.
A practical preparation for a mild leaf tea involves 1–2 teaspoons of chopped fresh leaves (or 1 teaspoon of dried leaves) per cup of just‑boiled water, steeped covered for 5–7 minutes; larger batches scale similarly. For a standard tincture, chopped leaves are macerated in 40–45% ethanol at a 1:5 plant‑to‑solvent weight/volume ratio for 4–6 weeks in a dark place, shaking daily, then strained. If reusing the marc, add fresh solvent to reach a 1:2 final ratio; typically 2–4 mL are taken two to three times daily in a little water, with the course limited to two weeks. Safety: ensure correct identification, as misidentification with plants like Epipremnum can occur; avoid during pregnancy unless advised by a qualified practitioner; discontinue if irritation or allergic reactions develop.
Well‑established constituents in Pandanus tectorius include monoterpenes such as myrcene, linalool, and alpha‑ and beta‑pinene; the phenylpropanoid 4‑allylanisole; phenylethyl alcohol; and flavonoids and phenolic acids including vanillic and ferulic acids (Pattanaik et al., 2008; He et al., 2015). These compounds, notably the aroma‑rich monoterpenes, plausibly underlie the infusions’ aromatic and gently carminative effects. The essential oil is known for its antibacterial, anti‑inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, which align with the historical internal use of teas and external application of macerated leaves for minor irritations.
Modern relevance: today, the species remains widely cultivated for its aromatic leaves and continues to be used in teas and infusions across the Pacific and Southeast Asia, while ongoing research explores its essential oil for topical and antimicrobial applications (Sumer et al., 2020).
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Leaves are harvested for fibers, woven into mats, hats, baskets, sails, and thatch; young leaf bases and mature fruits are eaten locally. Seeds may be roasted or boiled.
Industrial and craft applications:
Mature leaves are split, dried, and twisted or woven into cordage, mats, baskets, hats, and sails. In Polynesia, leaf strips are used to thatch structures; dried leaves serve as roofing and wall panels. Minor uses include scouring pads and brooms made from leaf fibers.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Ripe fruits are consumed after removing irritant sap; arils are edible. Young, fleshy leaf bases and the core of the crown are eaten as vegetables after thorough cooking; some populations consume the flower buds. Seeds are roasted or boiled.
Colorants and tanning:
No reliable, taxon-specific records of dye or tannin use were identified.
Wood and fiber:
Bast fiber from mature leaves is pliant and durable, enabling weaving and thatching. The wood is generally soft and lightweight; no major timber applications are documented.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
No confirmed fragrance or cosmetic uses are reported for this species.
Properties relevant to use:
Bast fibers are long and flexible, suitable for twining and weaving. Leaves weather well when dried and assembled in overlapping layers for thatch; no specific chemical indices are commonly referenced.
Standards and regulation:
No established ISO/ASTM/EN or national regulatory standards specific to Pandanus tectorius products were identified.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Leaves are selectively harvested, often from trees that also bear fruit, maintaining resource availability; location-specific guidelines for thatch and craft fiber are not standardized.
