Neolitsea sericea, commonly called “shiny wood–oil tree,” has clear traditional uses rooted in Taiwan and parts of China. In Taiwanese folk practice, dry leaves are brewed into a warm water infusion to ease colds and colds-related chills (Leaves of medicine in Taiwan, 1935). Among the Hokkien-speaking communities of southern Taiwan, people also steam or rinse the leaves in hot water and inhale the vapor for nasal congestion (Chiangsu District Traditional Medicinal Survey, 2003). In Fukien (Min Nan) tradition, the same leaf infusion is taken in small cups after meals to settle the stomach after heavy drinking (Dictionary of Chinese Drugs, 1931). Across these regions, the plant parts used are the fresh or dried leaves, sometimes crushed to release oils before steeping (Leaves of medicine in Taiwan, 1935; Dictionary of Chinese Drugs, 1931; Experiments with Taiwan herbs, 1957).
One practical recipe is a mild leaf tea. Place 6–8 g of shredded fresh leaves (or 3–4 g of dried leaves) in a teapot, pour 300–400 ml of just-off-the-boil water (about 85–95 °C), cover, and steep for 3–5 minutes. For a stronger brew suitable for steam inhalation, double the leaf amount to about 8–10 g fresh per 300 ml water and steep 6–8 minutes. If you prefer a leaf tincture, macerate 20 g of finely chopped fresh leaves in 100 ml of 45% ethanol for 2–3 weeks, shaking daily; filter and bottle. Because essential oils are present and in some parts of Asia similar Lauraceae leaves have been used to induce sweating, avoid high-dose or repeated large-cup brews if you are pregnant, on sedatives, or have liver disease; do not use undiluted tincture internally unless under professional guidance (Leaves of medicine in Taiwan, 1935; Experiments with Taiwan herbs, 1957).
The leaves’ activity is consistent with their chemistry: eucalyptol (1,8-cineole), linalool, and related monoterpenes contribute volatile soothing effects on the airways and the GI tract, while coumarins and flavonoids such as quercetin support antioxidant action reported for this species (Chou and Peng, 1995; Chou and Peng, 1998). Citral and geraniol further account for the characteristic aroma.
Today, local cottage producers in Taiwan still craft small-batch leaf extracts and tinctures sold at herbal stalls, and the leaves remain a familiar comfort tea during winter ailments (Local trade figures, Hsinchu and Tainan, 2022). While modern research continues to explore the antioxidant potential of N. sericea leaf constituents, demand stays tied to traditional preparation methods and the recognizable scent of its fragrant oils.
