Otostegia fruticosa is valued across Jordan, Palestine, and Iraq as a daily herbal tea and a soothing home remedy. In northern Jordan, people gather the tender leaves and young shoots in spring, rinse them briefly, and simmer or steep them as a decoction or infusion to settle indigestion and ease colicky stomach aches (Hassan et al., 2015). In the West Bank highlands, traditional women’s knowledge records the same parts prepared as a mild tea or cold infusion, taken warm or at room temperature for gas, mild diarrhea, or to calm a sore throat (Bennett et al., 2021). Among Bedouin communities in central Iraq, particularly in areas near the Euphrates and desert margins, the same aerial parts are ground or crushed fresh and applied as a poultice to joints or skin inflammations, with occasional flower tops added to infusions when in bloom (Ali et al., 2010). These preparations show a consistent pattern: leaves and young shoots for internal teas and decoctions, with topical use limited to fresh or moistened plant material.

For a practical daily infusion, use about 6 g of clean, fresh leaves and tender shoots (roughly 1–2 tablespoons of well‑pressed material) per 250 ml of just‑off‑the‑boil water, steep 5–7 minutes, strain, and sip 1–2 cups per day. For a stronger decoction to calm dyspepsia, simmer the same amount of plant material with 250 ml of water for 5–10 minutes, allow to cool to hand‑warm, and drink 150–200 ml as needed. If you prefer a hydroethanolic tincture, macerate 1 part dried, chopped leaves with 5 parts 50–60% alcohol by volume for 2 weeks in a dark place, shaking daily, then strain; 1–2 ml taken up to twice daily is common in traditional practice. Keep internal doses modest and do not exceed several cups of tea daily; pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should avoid regular use, and anyone on strong medicines should consult a professional before adding this remedy.

Phytochemical studies of the aerial parts confirm high levels of the flavonoids luteolin and apigenin, their glycosides, as well as rosmarinic acid and the phenylpropanoid caffeic acid. These compounds are well documented in laboratory analyses of Otostegia fruticosa and align with the plant’s traditional use for soothing digestive complaints and calming inflammation. Late‑season collections show somewhat higher phenolic levels, but the therapeutic window appears consistent across typical infusion strengths.

Today, laboratory studies continue to explore the antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory activity of extracts made from this species, and the dried herb is still found in Jordanian and Palestinian markets as a traditional tea (Al‑Bakri et al., 2020; Bennett et al., 2021).
