Mesosphaerum suaveolens, locally called “Mexican oregano,” is a staple in the kitchens and medicine cabinets of many Mesoamerican peoples. Among the Mixtec of Oaxaca, García et al., 2018 report that the fresh leaves are steeped in hot water to treat stomachaches and indigestion, while the dried stems are used in a decoction for colds and flu. The Zapotec of the same region, in a survey by Sánchez et al., 2019, describe a poultice made from crushed leaves applied to skin irritations and minor wounds. In central Mexico, the Nahua use a tincture of the whole plant (leaves and stems) to relieve headaches and as a mild sedative, noting that the infusion should be taken in small doses. These practices illustrate a consistent theme: the plant’s leaves and stems are the primary medicinal parts, used mainly as infusions, decoctions, or topical poultices.

A simple, safe tea can be prepared at home with the following method. Take 5 g of dried leaves (about one tablespoon) and pour 250 ml of freshly boiled water over them. Let the mixture steep for 5–10 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup in the morning or after meals to aid digestion. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have a history of uterine contractions, avoid this tea, as the plant’s essential oils may stimulate uterine activity. For a stronger effect, a 1:5 ethanol tincture can be made by soaking 20 g of fresh leaves in 100 ml of 70 % ethanol for 4 weeks, shaking daily; strain and keep the liquid in a dark glass bottle. Use no more than 1 ml per day, diluted in water, and consult a healthcare professional before regular use.

The pharmacological basis for these traditional uses lies in the plant’s rich essential oil profile. Analyses of M. suaveolens leaves reveal high concentrations of menthone, pulegone, thymol, carvacrol, and linalool. These compounds have documented antimicrobial, anti‑inflammatory, and antispasmodic activities that align with the plant’s use for digestive upset, respiratory infections, and skin healing. The presence of pulegone, in particular, explains the mild uterine stimulant effect noted by traditional practitioners.

Today, the essential oil of Mesosphaerum suaveolens is commercially available as a culinary spice and as an ingredient in natural cleaning products. Ongoing research is exploring its antimicrobial efficacy against resistant bacteria and its potential as a natural preservative. While modern science confirms many of the plant’s traditional benefits, the cultural knowledge of Mixtec, Zapotec, and Nahua healers continues to guide its use in everyday life.
