Clinopodium chinense, commonly called fenglengcai or denglongcao in Chinese, is used medicinally across parts of China and Vietnam and in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. Traditional preparations are largely aqueous infusions or decoctions of the aerial parts. Among the Chinese in Hunan, Hubei, and Sichuan provinces, a warm leaf-and-stem tea is taken to lower fever, soothe sore throat, and relieve gastrointestinal discomfort such as dysentery and gastritis (Cao and Du, 2016; Jiangsu New Medical College, 1977). In northern Vietnam, village herbalists in Hanoi and surrounding provinces prepare a stronger leaf decoction for dysentery and external washes for skin infections and ulcers (Chien, 1977). In Japanese folk medicine, Okinawan communities take a cool leaf infusion to treat “heat” conditions and as a topical rinse for sore throat and minor mouth inflammation (Uphof, 1968). Decoctions are also employed as washes or compresses for bruises and boils across southern China (Jiangsu New Medical College, 1977).

A practical and commonly described method is a mild leaf-and-stem infusion used for internal warmth during fever and throat irritation. Place about 5–7 g of fresh aerial parts (or 2–3 g of dried herb) in 250–300 mL of just-boiled water, cover, and steep 10–15 minutes; drink one cup two to three times daily. For a gentler, mouth-throat rinse, steep the same amount in 300 mL for 10 minutes, cool to a comfortable temperature, and swish 30–60 seconds without swallowing. When used as a wash for skin infections or bruises, prepare a decoction with 10 g dried aerial parts in 500 mL water, simmer for 10 minutes, cool to warm, and apply 1–3 times daily with clean cloths. Caution: avoid doses higher than traditional ranges or long-term use during pregnancy and lactation; discontinue if digestive upset or rash occurs and consult a qualified practitioner.

Well‑established constituents reported for Clinopodium chinense include flavonoids such as apigenin and luteolin, the phenolic acid rosmarinic acid, and ursolic acid. These compounds are widely documented in Clinopodium species and align with the plant’s traditional applications as a warming febrifuge and mild antimicrobial for throat and gastrointestinal discomfort (Cao and Du, 2016; Chien, 1977; Uphof, 1968).

Clinopodium chinense is still gathered in the wild and used in local practice in southern China and northern Vietnam (Jiangsu New Medical College, 1977; Chien, 1977), and it continues to be included in contemporary reviews of Chinese medicinal plants. While research is growing, standardized clinical data remain limited, so forms remain artisanal rather than widely commercial.
