Ethnobotanical uses of Centaurium erythraea are recorded in several regions. Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, a “bitter tea” of the aerial parts is taken as a tonic and digestive bitter (Bennett et al., 2021). In Egypt, folk practice records infusions of the herb as a bitter tonic and a cold maceration of the herb for liver and gastric complaints (Boulos, 1983). In Turkish traditional medicine, a tea of the aerial parts is used for stomach ache, appetite loss, and as a bitter tonic; it is also valued for its fine, aromatic flavor (Baytop, 1994; Tuzlacı and Tolon, 2000). A concise recipe for a mild bitter tea is simple and reproducible: combine 1–2 teaspoons (about 1–2 g) of dried aerial parts with about 200 mL of freshly boiled water, steep 10–15 minutes, strain, and drink a small cup 2–3 times daily. The bitterness increases with longer steeping or a higher dose. Safety notes: because it is a potent bitter, some people may experience stomach irritation or heartburn; prolonged high‑dose use is not recommended and use during pregnancy is best avoided (EMA, 2016). Many traditional practices rely on a 1:5 w/v ethanol tincture, macerating dried aerial parts in 45% ethanol for 2–4 weeks, pressing and filtering; a typical dose is 2–5 mL per day, usually diluted in water. As with any bitter tonic, not advised for anyone sensitive to the plant or during pregnancy unless supervised by a qualified practitioner.
Well‑established constituents that plausibly account for the bitter activity are the iridoid glycosides swertiamarin and gentiopicrin (gentiopicroside), plus characteristic xanthones such as bellidifolin, swertisin, and swertiside. These bitter compounds stimulate digestive secretions and appetite and have been documented for C. erythraea in multiple phytochemical surveys and pharmacognosy references. Swertiamarin is typically the most abundant bitter iridoid in Centaurium species and has been investigated experimentally for choleretic effects and digestive support, while gentiopicrin contributes to the overall bitter profile. Modern relevance is active: extracts and standardized products are commercially available in European herbal markets and continue to be used as digestive bitters. Contemporary research is exploring their mechanisms of action on bile flow and gastric motility, and clinical trials on standardized iridoid/xanthone extracts are underway in Europe to quantify appetite‑stimulating and digestive outcomes.
