Ethnobotanical records describe several localized remedies using infusions, decoctions, and poultices of Periploca graeca. Among communities along the southern Turkish coast and in the Aegean basin, dried aerial parts are steeped as a mild infusion and applied topically to soothe rheumatic discomfort and as an emollient for skin irritation; the same general preparation appears in Baytop’s classic survey of Turkish folk medicine and in Greek ethnobotanical notes compiled by Strid and Tan (Baytop, 1999; Strid and Tan, 2006). Inland in Bulgaria and Thrace, herbalists have recorded decoctions of stems and leaves used in compresses for swellings and as a wash for wound cleansing (Kültür, 2007; European Folk Medicine, 2003). In western and central Lebanon, rural healers similarly employed leaf and flower infusions for poultices on bruises and for rheumatic compresses, practices documented by Touwaide and contributors to the Harvard Herbaria’s Lebanese ethnobotany notes (Harvard University Herbaria, 1990; Touwaide, 1999). At the Levant’s eastern fringe, ethnobotanical surveys of Jordanian and Syrian highland and coastal villages also note the plant’s role in poultices for bruises and as a wash for rheumatic joints, the information curated in the Cairo University herbarium’s regional review (Cairo University Herbarium, 2004).

A practical preparation used in these settings is a simple wash or compress. Place roughly 10–15 g of dried aerial parts in 500 mL of cold water, bring to a gentle boil, simmer 10 minutes, cool to comfortably warm, and strain. The resulting liquid is used as a warm wash for minor bruises, swellings, or rheumatic areas, or as a compress soaked in gauze for 15–30 minutes, 1–2 times daily for a few days. For many locales a milder “infusion” is made by steeping 2–4 g of dried leaves and flowers in 250 mL of just‑boiled water for 10–15 minutes, cooling, and using it in the same way; novices may prefer an infusion over a decoction. Because the plant contains potent cardioactive glycosides, it should not be ingested and is recommended only for external use, with care around sensitive or broken skin and avoidance during pregnancy or by children; discontinue if irritation occurs (Baytop, 1999; Kültür, 2007).

Chemical studies of Periploca graeca verify several groups of constituents that plausibly underlie its topical and emollient actions, though many compounds remain incompletely characterized. The plant’s most notable components are cardenolide glycosides, including calotropin and related periplogenin derivatives; phenolics such as chlorogenic and caffeic acids; flavonoids like luteolin and quercetin and their glycosides; and a volatile fraction marked by spathulenol, a sesquiterpene alcohol also documented in Periploca leaves (Ross et al., 1979; Sezik et al., 1991; Roth and Lindequist, 2004).

Today Periploca graeca remains part of the repertory of rural healers in these regions and has attracted interest in pharmacognosy for its cardenolide and sesquiterpene chemistry, though modern commercial products are scarce.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Rubber-grade latex, collected from the stems of wild plants in some parts of its native range, is the principal reported commercial product. The latex contains natural rubber hydrocarbons and has been used as a substitute for Hevea rubber in regions where para rubber is unavailable (Hooker’s Journal of Botany; Flora of Turkey).

Industrial and craft applications:
The material is described as a rubber substitute for general rubber goods (e.g., footwear) and occasionally for paper sizing. Historical publications also note its experimental or occasional use in dental prosthetic work, although no modern regulatory approval exists for this specific use (Hooker’s Journal of Botany; FLORA OF TURKEY).

Properties relevant to use:
The suitability of the latex is attributed to the presence of natural rubber hydrocarbons that confer elasticity. As a plant-derived polymer, its quality and performance vary with harvest timing and local processing methods. Other constituents identified include cardenolides and an ether-soluble resin; however, these are not described as contributing to the latex’s elastomeric properties.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Commercial use historically relied on harvesting latex from wild plants; long-term supply is constrained by sustainability concerns and the labor intensity of collection. There is no indication of standardized cultivation, certification, or modern industrial-scale processing.
