Alstonia scholaris, known in Ayurveda as “Saptaparni,” has a long record of use as an anti‑inflammatory and expectorant. In the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (2010) the bark is boiled in water to produce a decoction that is drunk to relieve cough, asthma, and fever. The same bark decoction is also applied as a poultice to swellings and skin infections, a practice documented by Sharma (2015) in his monograph on Indian medicinal trees. In Sri Lankan traditional medicine, Perera (2018) reports that a tea made from fresh leaves is taken to treat sore throats and to soothe the digestive tract. Among the Yoruba healers of southwestern Nigeria, Bennett et al. (2021) describe a tincture of bark used to treat urinary tract infections and as a topical wash for wounds.

A simple, safe preparation is a mild bark tea. Take 5 g of dried bark, steep in 250 ml of boiling water for 10 minutes, strain, and drink one cup twice daily. The decoction is generally well tolerated; however, pregnant women should avoid it, and individuals with liver disease should use caution because the bark contains alkaloids that may be hepatotoxic in high doses.

The pharmacological activity of Alstonia scholaris is largely attributed to its alkaloid content, especially the indole alkaloids alstonine and scholaricine, which have been shown to possess bronchodilatory and anti‑inflammatory effects. These compounds provide a plausible biochemical basis for the traditional use of the bark as an expectorant and anti‑inflammatory agent.

Modern research continues to explore the therapeutic potential of Alstonia scholaris. Recent studies have examined its antimicrobial and anti‑cancer properties, and the plant is available in some herbal supplement markets as a standardized bark extract.

Common products: The timber of *Alstonia scholaris* is utilized for low-grade applications such as matchsticks, pencils, picture frames, and packing cases.

Wood and fiber: The wood, classified as soft to moderately hard (average specific gravity around 0.45), possesses straight to irregular grain and fine texture, rendering it suitable for turnery and carving of small items. It is employed in the manufacture of matchsticks, pencil slats, picture frames, and low-cost furniture components. The sapwood is light and not durable; the heartwood is reddish-brown and not termite-resistant.

Sustainability and sourcing: Listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN, the species occurs widely in South and Southeast Asia. It demonstrates tolerance to varied soil conditions and recovers rapidly after lopping or cutting. Sustainable harvest from plantations and natural regeneration are viable sources.
