Alstonia macrophylla, a tall evergreen of the Apocynaceae, is a staple in several traditional medical systems. In the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (2000) the bark is boiled as a kashaya to treat cough, fever, and skin eruptions, while the leaves are used in a similar decoction for respiratory complaints. An ethnobotanical survey of the Central Province of Sri Lanka (2012) records that the root is macerated in water to produce a mild tea for febrile illnesses and that the bark is also applied as a poultice to reduce inflammation on the skin. In the Malay Peninsula, a 2018 survey of local healers notes that the leaves are steeped in hot water to relieve sore throats and that the bark is used in a decoction for malaria‑like fevers. Across these cultures the plant is consistently prepared as an infusion or decoction, with the bark, leaves, and root each playing a role in treating respiratory, febrile, and dermatologic conditions.

A simple, safe preparation is a mild bark tea. Take 5 g of dried bark, place it in a cup, and pour 250 ml of freshly boiled water over it. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain and drink two cups per day. This dosage is well tolerated in most adults; however, pregnant women and individuals with a history of gastrointestinal upset should avoid it, as high concentrations of alkaloids can cause nausea or abdominal discomfort.

The therapeutic effects of Alstonia macrophylla are largely attributed to its indole alkaloids, most notably alstonine and vasicine, which have been isolated from the bark and leaves. These compounds exhibit anti‑inflammatory, antipyretic, and antimicrobial activities in laboratory assays. The plant also contains flavonoids and tannins that contribute antioxidant and astringent properties, supporting its traditional use for skin conditions and fever.

Modern research continues to explore Alstonia macrophylla’s pharmacology. Recent studies have confirmed the anti‑inflammatory potency of alstonine and have identified vasicine as a promising antimalarial lead compound. The bark tea remains commercially available in herbal markets across South and Southeast Asia, and its use persists in community health practices, bridging ancient wisdom with contemporary scientific inquiry.

Common products:
The species yields a lightweight softwood suitable for low-grade timber. Publications on Malayan timbers describe its use for non-durable, low-stress components where low strength is acceptable and cost is a primary constraint. The heartwood is pale and not noted for durability, limiting applications to protected interiors and temporary structures.

Wood and fiber:
The wood fibers are short to medium in length with moderate lignin and hemicellulose content typical of Apocynaceae. It is not a preferred species for high-quality joinery or exterior use due to susceptibility to insects and moisture. Logging waste and thinning produce pulp-grade furnish that has been trialed for paper and board with alkaline or neutral sulfite pulping; data emphasize its suitability for non-bleached grades.

Industrial and craft applications:
Given its softness and low density, the timber can be machined into match splints and wooden pencils, especially where warp control and uniformity are not critical. Bark has been evaluated as a source of tannins suitable for leather tanning; quebracho-type catechol tannins have been reported in the genus, with values and formulations documented in FAO leather technology references for related Alstonia species. Alkaloid-bearing latex is present and is not recommended for food-contact or edible-oil applications.

Colorants and tanning:
Tannin extracts from bark, roots, or trunk wood produce brown dyes for protein fibers and function as tanning agents for leather. Conditions such as pH, temperature, and mordant selection affect hue and leather quality. The plant material contains hydrolyzable and condensed tannin fractions; quebracho-type condensed tannins are prominent and contribute to high lightfastness on wool.

Properties relevant to use:
The wood shows low basic density (typically 300–450 kg/m³), moderate fiber strength, and moisture sensitivity; fibers contain cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin with typical syringyl/guaiacyl ratios for hardwoods. Tannins are primarily condensed (proanthocyanidins) with reported total phenol content and pH within ranges suited to chrome and vegetable tanning. Alkaloids in latex restrict edible uses.

Standards and regulation:
Timber is graded under national hardwood classification schemes (e.g., Malaysia and ASEAN standards for grading, moisture content, and defects). Tannin extracts for leather are subject to country-specific limits on heavy metals and preservatives in export markets; chemical specifications are given in FAO industrial bulletins and ISO/ASTM test methods for tannin purity.

Sustainability and sourcing:
The tree regenerates from seeds and coppice; early growth in secondary forests supports short rotation potential for fiber and low-grade timber. Selective harvesting from mixed rainforest is feasible, but forest management guidelines recommend retention of mature seed trees to maintain populations. As pest susceptibility is high, pest management in plantation contexts is advised.
