The seeds of Castanopsis eyrei are edible. In parts of southern China they are traditionally collected, lightly boiled or roasted, and may be milled into flour; the flour is used to make steamed cakes, dumplings, or a coarse “powder” added to porridges and desserts. Seeds are also fermented into a distiller’s mash for baijiu-type spirits in local regions, with distillation yielding a neutral spirit typically aged in earthenware.
