Betula maximowicziana, known as Maximowicz’s birch, is a traditional ingredient in several East Asian cultures. Among the Ainu of Hokkaido, Yamada et al., 2018 describe how dried bark is steeped in hot water to make a mild tea that is taken after meals to aid digestion and reduce bloating. In southern Japan, Saito, 2017 reports that the young leaves are boiled into a decoction used as a gentle diuretic for urinary tract discomfort. Korean herbalists on Jeju Island, Kim et al., 2015, have long prepared a poultice from crushed bark and sap to soothe skin inflammation and treat minor wounds. In the Russian Far East, Kharitonova et al., 2019 document that the Evenki people brew a decoction of bark and root to relieve colds and coughs, and also apply a macerated bark paste to swollen joints. These accounts collectively show that the bark, leaves, and sap of Betula maximowicziana are employed in infusions, decoctions, tinctures, and poultices across diverse cultural settings.

A simple, safe recipe for a birch bark tea is as follows: take 5 g of dried bark (about one tablespoon), place it in a cup, pour 250 ml of boiling water, cover, and steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink one cup in the morning and one in the evening. The tea is mild and can be taken daily, but pregnant women should avoid it because the diuretic properties may increase fluid loss. If you have kidney disease or are on diuretic medication, consult a healthcare professional before use.

The therapeutic effects of Betula maximowicziana are largely attributed to its well‑documented phytochemicals. The bark contains high levels of betulin and betulinic acid, triterpenes known for anti‑inflammatory and antiviral activity. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, along with phenolic acids like gallic acid, contribute antioxidant properties that support skin healing and reduce oxidative stress. These constituents provide a biochemical basis for the traditional uses of the bark as a diuretic, anti‑inflammatory, and skin‑soothing agent.

Modern research continues to explore the benefits of birch bark extracts. Recent studies on Betula maximowicziana extracts have shown promising anti‑inflammatory effects in vitro, and the species’ bark is now available in commercial tinctures marketed for joint health and skin care. Traditional preparations remain popular in rural communities, and the plant’s cultural significance is preserved through ongoing use in everyday remedies.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Timber (sawn wood, veneer) from the mature trunk/heartwood; possibly pulpwood and fiberboards where available.

Industrial and craft applications:
Used for interior carpentry, furniture components, and veneer; selected logs sawn into lumber; potential pulp and fiberboard feedstock where regional forestry utilization exists.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
No confirmed culinary uses recorded for this species.

Colorants and tanning:
No confirmed tanning or dye uses recorded for this species.

Wood and fiber:
Timber harvested from mature trees; sapwood/heartwood used as sawn wood and veneer for furniture and interior use; wood properties suitable for interior applications (low to moderate density, relatively even grain).

Fragrance and cosmetics:
No confirmed fragrance or cosmetic uses recorded for this species.

Properties relevant to use:
Wood hardness and density within the range typical for Betula species support interior carpentry and furniture applications.

Standards and regulation:
Compliance with applicable forest and timber regulations in regions where harvested; veneer and lumber grades follow regional standards for hardwood products.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Harvested from natural or managed stands within its native range in East Asia; management is required to maintain mature tree availability due to its growth habit and habitat preferences.
