General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Laburnum anagyroides is cultivated primarily as an ornamental tree. Nurseries produce it as container‑grown or bare‑root stock for use in public parks, street plantings and private gardens. The species is prized for its pendulous, bright yellow racemes in late spring and its moderate size, making it suitable for small‑ to medium‑scale landscaping. Selected cultivars vary in flower size, habit (including weeping forms) and foliage colour, expanding its market appeal. The plant forms a modest but steady segment of the ornamental plant trade.
Wood and fiber:
Mature trees yield small‑diameter trunks that provide dense, hard timber with fine, even grain. The heartwood is yellowish‑brown to orange‑brown and finishes smoothly. Because the trunks are limited in size, the wood is not used for structural lumber but is valued by craft woodworkers for turnery, carving, inlay work, small tool handles, ornamental boxes and occasional musical‑instrument components (e.g., pegs, fretboards). High density and low resin content give good durability and dimensional stability after seasoning, enabling precise machining. The wood’s bright colour and tight grain make it attractive for decorative inlays.
Properties relevant to use:
The timber has a high specific gravity for hardwoods, contributing to hardness and durability. Its uniform grain reduces tear‑out during turning and planing, and it shows low shrinkage on drying, limiting warping. The species produces negligible tannins or extractives, so no special pre‑treatment is required for glue uptake or dye application. These traits make it suitable for high‑quality craft work. The material shows good dimensional stability under normal indoor humidity, important for precise craft applications.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Laburnum anagyroides is native to southern Europe and occurs in other temperate regions. It is not listed as threatened and is cultivated widely for ornamental purposes. Timber is obtained only as a by‑product of tree removal or pruning for landscaping; there is no dedicated logging. Consequently, the supply of wood is limited but renewable, and there are no conservation concerns. Its resilience to pruning allows repeated harvesting without compromising plant health.
