General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
- Timber, lumber and veneer from Dipteryx lacunifera, a dense hardwood harvested in the Amazon region.
Industrial and craft applications:
- The wood is employed for heavy‑duty structural components such as beams and columns, high‑traffic flooring (including sports halls and industrial settings), interior and exterior joinery, furniture, cabinetry, veneer production, outdoor decking, marine planking, tool handles, engineered flooring, and high‑quality decorative interior panels. Its fine grain and attractive amber‑brown colour also make it valued for decorative veneer and high‑end furniture finishes.
Wood and fiber:
- Both heartwood and sapwood are harvested for structural timber.
Properties relevant to use:
- Typical physical and mechanical properties of Dipteryx lacunifera timber include a basic density of 0.95–1.05 g cm⁻³, a Janka hardness of about 1 300 lbf, a modulus of rupture around 150 MPa, a compressive strength parallel to the grain of roughly 70 MPa, an elastic modulus of approximately 15 GPa, radial shrinkage of about 3 % and tangential shrinkage of about 6 % at 12 % moisture content. The wood’s high extractive content gives it a Class I durability classification, meaning high resistance to fungal decay and insect attack, while its low shrinkage and moderate elasticity contribute to dimensional stability under variable humidity.
Standards and regulation:
- In Brazil, timber from D. lacunifera must comply with ABNT NBR 7190 (Timber Structures Design Code) and is classified as Class A structural wood under the Brazilian Timber Classification System. Export shipments fall under the International Trade Classification System (NCM 4407.22) for hardwood lumber.
Sustainability and sourcing:
- The species is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and is not listed in the CITES Appendices. Commercial harvesting is conducted within sustainably managed Amazon forest concessions, often with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, and the species is included in regional timber management plans that aim to maintain forest cover and biodiversity.
