In traditional East Asian medicine the dried roots of Astragalus membranaceus are made into teas and decoctions, both alone and with other herbs. In northern China, herbal texts record a decoction of sliced roots for qi-tonifying formulas and convalescent support (Bensky et al., 2004), and classic formulas such as Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang highlight its use in qi-lifting combinations (Unschuld, 1985). Among Mongol communities in Inner Mongolia, decoctions and root teas are also used as general strengthening remedies and to aid convalescence (Natsagdorj et al., 2013). In contemporary clinical practice in southern China, gentle root teas or decoctions are prepared for immune support and during recovery from illness (Chan, 2005; Pengelly, 2004). In the Russian Far East and neighboring regions, decoctions and “teas” from Astragalus roots have been described for convalescent and diuretic use in folk practice (Khasanov, 1978). In all of these accounts, only the root is used; aerial parts are not employed for medicinal preparations.
A straightforward decoction uses 9–15 g of dried Astragalus root slices simmered in 500–600 mL of water for 30–40 minutes, then strained. The resulting decoction is commonly consumed in 2–3 doses throughout the day. For a milder daily tonic tea, use 6–9 g of sliced root and simmer in 400–500 mL of water for 20–30 minutes. Safety notes: Astragalus is generally well tolerated, but people taking immunosuppressive therapy should use it cautiously (Natural Medicines, 2023). Because it can affect blood sugar and blood pressure, those on related medications should monitor these parameters and consult a practitioner.
The roots contain well-established phytochemicals that plausibly underpin its traditional activity, including immunomodulatory astragalosides (triterpenoid saponins) and the targeted cycloartane saponin astragaloside IV; flavonoid glycosides such as calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucoside; and immunomodulatory polysaccharides (Huang et al., 2010; Qi et al., 2009). These constituents have documented in vitro and in vivo effects on immune signaling, antioxidant capacity, and metabolic pathways, supporting the traditional applications (Natural Medicines, 2023).
Today Astragalus root is a common dietary supplement in the United States and Europe, available as tea, tincture, and encapsulated extracts, while decoctions and root teas remain widely used in Chinese domestic and clinical settings (Bensky et al., 2004; Natural Medicines, 2023).
