Umtiza is a unique genus in the Fabaceae family, consisting of only one species, Umtiza listeriana. This tree is native to a small coastal region in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It has a limited distribution, spanning from East London to Kentani and King William's Town, with only 6 known locations. Due to its small range, Umtiza listeriana is classified as Vulnerable B1ab(v) by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). To protect and restore the remaining Umtiza Forest, an area of 1,858.48 hectares surrounding the Umtiza Nature Reserve has been declared a Controlled Forest Area. This species is threatened by illegal settlements and deforestation for traditional medicine, making conservation efforts crucial for its survival.
