It is also valued for its medicinal properties, as the resin is used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments. The tree is native to tropical forests in Mexico, Peru, and Brazil, and can reach heights of up to 45 meters. It has two varieties, known as Tolu balsam tree and Peru balsam tree, which produce different types of resin. The tree has a round crown and yellowish bark with a strong odor. Its leaves are pubescent and have glandular oil dots. The tree blooms after 5 years and produces white flowers with 10 stamens. The fruit is a flat, winged pod that drops in the months of November to January. The wood of M. balsamum is used for various purposes, including flooring, furniture, and construction, and is resistant to fungal decay. The tree is also planted for balsam production in other regions such as West Africa, India, and Sri Lanka. Its resin is used in the production of cosmetics and medicines, and the tree is also valued for its medicinal properties in traditional medicine.
