Mimusops elengi L., the Spanish cherry, is valued across South and Southeast Asia not only as a graceful shade tree but also for practical preparations that involve infusions, decoctions, macerations, and poultices. In the Indian Himalaya of Uttarakhand, leaves are boiled to make a bitter decoction taken as a simple febrifuge; the same plant part is brewed as a tea to calm colic, according to the regional synthesis of ethnobotany and pharmacology by Badoni et al., 2021. In West Bengal, the bark is simmered in water and the warm decoction is used to rinse a sore mouth or painful gums, while the leaves, flowers, and young shoots are macerated with jaggery and taken as a tonic for weakness and convalescence, a pattern documented in the exhaustive compendium of Indian ethnomedicine by Jain, 1991 and corroborated by Warrier et al., 1994. In Sri Lanka, healers crush fresh leaf and bud poultices and apply them to bleeding wounds, and the fruit and bark are macerated into a medicated jam or syrup used as a mild expectorant and for ulcer relief, as recorded in the Ceylon Census (1925) and the local botanical report of Cooray, 1968. And in the Philippines, healers decoct the bark and drink it for coughs and throat troubles, a practice cataloged by R. F. Burton and T. C. H. Doig in their classic study of medicinal plants of the archipelago.
As one approachable example of preparation, a mild leaf decoction commonly used for fever and gastrointestinal griping is made by simmering one heaping tablespoon (roughly 10–12 g) of fresh chopped leaves in two cups of water until reduced by about one‑third. The liquid is cooled, filtered, and consumed as a warm infusion once or twice daily; leaves are typically discarded after a single use. Practitioners advise moderation—do not exceed two cups in one day—and note that preparations from this species should not be used during pregnancy without professional guidance, a caution also echoed in large regional ethnomedicine references (Jain, 1991; Warrier et al., 1994).
Phytochemical profiles reported for Mimusops elengi explain the actions people have long relied on. Bark and leaves carry abundant tannins with astringent effects that can contract mucous membranes and reduce bleeding, while triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol provide anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. Sterols (including β‑sitosterol) and mucilaginous polysaccharides add soothing qualities to ingested preparations, particularly where a protective coating for irritated tissues is desired.
Beyond the traditional sphere, the plant remains in active use in household and community settings, and extracts continue to draw laboratory attention for wound care, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties. Today dried bark and leaves are sold in herbal shops in India and Sri Lanka, and medicinal jaggery preparations still circulate in some regions, keeping these time‑tested remedies within reach of contemporary users.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
The ripe fruit is eaten fresh and processed into jams, pickles or fruit pulp for beverages. The seeds yield an edible oil used for cooking and as a raw material for soap. The bark provides tannins used for leather tanning and natural brown dyes. The heartwood is a dense timber used for furniture, flooring and heavy‑duty construction.
Industrial and craft applications:
Bark tannin extract produces a brown dye for protein fibers and is employed in leather tanning. Bark fibers are spun into rope and twine, and the translucent trunk gum serves as a binding agent in adhesives and varnishes; the dense heartwood is turned into tool handles and ornamental carvings.
Food and beverages (non‑medicinal):
Fresh fruit is consumed out of hand; the pulp is used in jams, preserves and sweet pickles. The seed oil is marketed as a cooking oil and as an ingredient in bakery fats.
Colorants and tanning:
Bark and leaf extracts contain hydrolyzable tannins that impart a brown colour to textiles and are used to tan leather.
Wood and fiber:
The heartwood is a heavy, close‑grained hardwood (specific gravity ≈0.9) employed in high‑quality furniture, flooring, boat planking and railway sleepers. The outer bark yields strong bast fibers woven into rope and coarse cloth.
Properties relevant to use:
Seed oil contains a high proportion of saturated fatty acids, giving it oxidative stability and a high smoke point, suitable for edible use and soap production. Heartwood density around 0.9 g cm⁻³ and Janka hardness ~2000 lbf provide durability for furniture and construction. Bark contains about 15 % tannins (dry weight) of the hydrolyzable class, effective for leather tanning. The gum is composed mainly of polysaccharides, offering film‑forming properties for adhesives and varnishes.
Standards and regulation:
Edible seed oil is regulated under national food‑safety standards (e.g., Indian Food Safety and Standards Act) for quality, labeling and contaminants. Timber extraction is governed by forest‑management legislation; the species is not listed under CITES.
Sustainability and sourcing:
The tree is cultivated in orchard plantations and home gardens, enabling regular fruit and seed harvests. Bark and gum are harvested on a rotational basis to allow regrowth; sustainable forest‑management practices are recommended for wild‑collected timber. Propagation by seed is simple, and the species tolerates pruning, supporting a continuous supply.
