Manilkara zapota, also known as sapodilla, is a long-lived, evergreen tree native to southern Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It is commonly grown in Mexico and tropical Asia, and was introduced to the Philippines during Spanish colonization. The tree can grow up to 30 meters tall and produces a large, sweet fruit with a grainy texture. The bark of the tree contains a white, gummy latex called chicle, which is used to make chewing gum. The leaves and seeds of the sapodilla tree have also been studied for their potential health benefits, such as anti-diabetic and antibacterial properties. The fruit is a popular food in the tropical Americas, and the tree is also valued for its ornamental leaves.
