Bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum) has a long tradition as a medicinal plant across the far‑north. Among the Sami of northern Scandinavia, dried leaves are collected in early summer and steeped as a mild tea to calm mild diarrhoea and stomach cramps (Rönnblom & Kuokkanen, 2005). In the interior of Alaska, the Koyukon people boil fresh leaves in water for fifteen minutes to make a decoction taken three times a day to relieve cough and cold symptoms (Luoma, 1990). Siberian Chukchi traditionally crush fresh leaves and soak them in cold water for 24 hours, then drink the infusion to ease urinary discomfort (Kozlov et al., 1994). Each practice involves an infusion, decoction, or maceration of the aerial parts, typically the leaves.

A practical preparation for a mild, digestive tea can be made from dried leaves. Weigh out roughly 2 g (about one generous teaspoon) of air‑dried leaf material and place it in a teapot. Add 250 mL of just‑boiled water, cover, and let the leaves steep for 5–7 minutes. The resulting beverage is strained and consumed while warm. Because bog bilberry leaf tea contains tannins and anthocyanins, it is advisable not to exceed three cups per day and to avoid it during pregnancy or lactation due to limited safety data. Store the dried leaves in a cool, dark place to preserve colour and flavour.

Scientific analyses confirm the presence of several well‑characterised phytochemicals that could underlie the observed gastrointestinal soothing effect. The leaves contain anthocyanins such as cyanidin‑3‑glucoside and cyanidin‑3‑galactoside (Räsänen et al., 2017), flavonols like quercetin and its glycosides (Pérez‑Jiménez & Neveu, 2014), and phenolic acids, notably chlorogenic and caffeic acids (Pérez‑Jiménez & Neveu, 2014). Vitamin C is also detectable (Määttä‑Riihinen, 2018), and proanthocyanidins contribute to the astringent taste. These compounds are known to have antioxidant and mild anti‑inflammatory properties, offering a plausible biochemical rationale for the traditional uses.

Current research explores the anti‑inflammatory activity of bog bilberry leaf extracts (Määttä‑Riihinen, 2018), and commercial tea products made from V. uliginosum leaves are now marketed in Finland and Sweden under the name “bog bilberry leaf tea”. Clinical trials in Scandinavia are assessing a standardised leaf extract for its role in supporting mild gastrointestinal comfort. While scientific interest grows, the plant continues to be gathered for personal use in many northern communities, preserving a living ethnobotanical tradition.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Edible berries are eaten raw, cooked into jams and syrups, or used in pastries and desserts. Reported compositional features relevant to these uses include high acidity and anthocyanin-based coloration; monoterpenes and higher alcohols have been detected in volatile profiles from V. uliginosum fruit.

Scientific/model-organism use:
V. uliginosum is used in population genetics, phylogeography, and hybridization studies, including microsatellite marker-based analyses of interbreeding with V. myrtillus and V. vitis-idaea, and chloroplast microsatellite analyses of postglacial colonization. A draft nuclear genome assembly is publicly available, enabling comparative Vaccinium genomics.
