Pennsylvania smartweed is a species of flowering plant in the buckwheat family, Polygonaceae, native to parts of North America, and introduced in parts of Europe and South America. It is an annual herb reaching 10 cm to 2 m tall, with lance-shaped leaves and pinkish or greenish tepals. It grows in moist, disturbed habitats and is an important part of the habitat for waterfowl and other birds, which use it for food and cover. Native Americans have various uses for the plant, including for epilepsy, horse colic, and post-partum healing.
