Eriogonum umbellatum, also known as sulphurflower buckwheat, is a wild buckwheat species found in western North America. It is abundant in various habitats, from sagebrush steppe to alpine areas. Due to its high variability and numerous varieties, it can be difficult to identify. It can range from a small herb with clusters of flowers to a large sprawling shrub. The leaves are typically woolly and the flowers come in a variety of colors. Native American groups have used this plant for medicinal purposes. It is also a popular host for several butterfly species and is consumed by goats and domestic sheep. Some varieties of this species include bramble hairstreak, desert green hairstreak, and western green hairstreak.
