Anamu (Petiveria alliacea) has a broad ethnomedicinal footprint across the Neotropics. Among rural communities of northeastern Brazil, leaves are prepared as an infusion or mild decoction for fevers and colds, and as a gargle for sore throat, while rubbed leaf poultices are applied to swellings or skin lesions (de Oliveira et al., 2010). In Cuban and Puerto Rican herbal practice, aerial parts are boiled as a decoction for colds, bronchial complaints, and as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory wash (Brouwer, 2003). Amazonian curanderismo in the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon records both internal decoctions and topical washes of leaves and stems for fevers, malaria, and female gynecologic pains (Cossio et al., 2008).
Practical preparation: mild leaf infusion. Roughly 1–2 g (1 small handful) of dried leaves or 5–10 g of fresh leaf are infused in 250 ml just-off-the-boil water for 10–15 minutes, then strained; sip 1/2–1 cup up to twice daily as needed. Traditional accounts warn against pregnancy or high-dose use; avoid in the first trimester and consult a clinician if on anticoagulants or sedatives (Brouwer, 2003).
Active constituents isolated from this species include flavonoids (e.g., quercetin- and kaempferol-3-O-rutinosides), phenolic acids (caffeic, p-coumaric), and triterpenoid saponins, which are consistent with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions observed in pharmacology (Barros et al., 2010). Commercial dried leaf is available in many Latin markets and is often used in home teas; modern laboratory work continues to probe its anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activities.
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Scientific and research uses:
Petiveria alliacea serves as a subject in phytochemical and pharmacological research due to the documented presence of bioactive compounds such as saponins, flavonoids, and alkaloids. Extracts and isolated compounds are studied in laboratory settings to investigate biological activities and mechanisms. It is a model organism in these research contexts, contributing to databases and studies within the fields of ethnobotany, natural product chemistry, and related biological sciences. There are no other documented non-medicinal uses reported in reliable sources.
